Thomas Vaughan is Notable.

Lands and Titles

In right of his wife, he held, Chancton, Compton, Egley, Shopwick, Up Marden, Sussex.[1]

He was Esquire to the Body of King Edward IV 1450-1459, 1462-1475; Master of the Ordinance 1450-1461; Burgess (MP) for Marlboro 1455-1456; Keeper of the Great Wardrobe 1460-1461; Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex 1466-1467; Treasurer of the King's Chamber 1467-1482; Keeper of the Hanaper; Knight of the Shire for Cornwall, 1478; Comptroller of the coinage of tin in Cornwall and Devonshire; Chamberlain and Counsellor to Edward, Prince of Wales, son of King Henry IV 1471-1483; Attorney General of William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke.[1]

Thomas Vaughan married before 18 October 1460 to Alianor or Eleanor, daughter and coheiress of Sir Thomas Arundel of Betchworth, Surrey, and widow of Sir Thomas Browne.[1] They had no known issue.

Thomas was a great warrior in the Wars of the Roses and fought in 18 battles for King Edward IV.[1]

FROM ODNB:

"When Edward IV died (9 April 1483) Vaughan was with the prince at Ludlow. He was in the party which left on 24 April to accompany Edward V to his coronation. They were intercepted by Gloucester and the duke of Buckingham, and Vaughan, along with Richard Grey and Sir Richard Haute, was arrested in the king's lodgings at Stony Stratford on 30 April, accused of plotting against Gloucester. By now an 'aged knight' (Crowland Chronicle Continuations), he was confined at Pontefract. Some weeks later, he was condemned and on 25 June executed, a victim of Edward IV's trust and Richard of Gloucester's ambition."[2]

Research Notes

Removed parents Roger Vaughan and Eva Coch as parents as more contemporary sources (Royal/Magna Carta Ancestry and ODNB) give correct parents Robert and Margaret. Attached daughter Ann to Thomas, son of Roger, as Thomas Vaughan and Eleanor had no known issue.
Thomas Vaughan, Knt., was the son of Robert Vaughan, Esq., by his wife Margaret.[1][3][2] Claims that he was related to the Vaughans of Brecknockshire are not substantiated.[2]

error in DoD 23 Jun 1483 should read 25 Jun 1483 (as per ODNB quote) he was executed at Pontefract Castle

also "Chamberlain and Counsellor to Edward, Prince of Wales, son of King Henry IV 1471-1483" should read Edward, Prince of Wales who became King Edward V, the son of King Edward IV (not Henry IV)

The DNB article is outdated and conflated multiple Thomas Vaughans. His parents and daughter were disconnected (see research note) and more contemporary/reliable sources were added to the bio. If anyone wants to expand this bio, I'm happy to send you the pages from Royal Ancestry and ODNB (RA is not available online and ODNB can't be accessed w/o subscription). Thomas' parents, Robert and Margaret, need profiles added to WikiTree.

Thanks! Traci
