Biography

SAMUEL VAUGHN was born in Charles City County, Virginia.

WILLIAM VAUGHAN of Charles City County wrote his Last Will and Testament on 24 March 1692 leaving a legacy to his son, SAMUEL. The legacy was noted as:

"land I am now possessed with to be equally divided amongst my seven sonns, WILLIAM, RICHARD, JOHN, SAMUEL, DANIEL, JAMES and NICHOLAS VAUGHAN and each to have his part next and adjoyning to the plantation they are seated on..."[1] The will was recorded 4 June 1694 in Charles City County.

In 1703 Prince George County was created from Charles City County.

The 1704 Prince George County Quit Rent Rolls recorded Jno' Vaughan, 169 acres; Sam'l Vaughan, 169 acres; Dan'l Vaughan, 169 acres; James Vaughan, 169 acres; Rich'd Vaughan, 309 acres; Wm. Vaughan, 309 acres; and Nich'o Vaughan, 169 acres. Note: The 169 acres was 1/7 of the land owned by William Vaughan at his death. William Vaughan and Richard were jointly patented 281 acres bringing their total acreage to 309 acres.[2]

7 Feb 1710. Samuel Vaughan was adjacent to land sold by William Coleman, Jr. to Robert Munford. [3]

14 Aug1711. Samuel Vaughan mentioned as a purchaser in an estate account. [4]

The court records of Prince George County, Virginia recorded a suit in chancery cited as JOHN and SAMUEL VAUGHAN vs JOHN SEVEAR. At a Court held for Prince George County 13 September 1715 concerning the suit, it was noted:

"In suit between JOHN and SAM'l VAUGHAN and JAMES SEVEAR who intermarryed with SARAH VAUGHAN, Executrix of Wm. VAUGHAN dec'd, deft says he has paid debts agst estate of 5839 lbs tob. Plts. charge deft. with 3628 lbs tob. owed, which he denies. They are to bring evidence to court."[5] [6]

15 Sep 1718. Inventory of Samuel Vaughan was appraised by John Peterson, William Batte and Henry Batte. Valued at 68£ 2 sh 1 p. Returned to court by Sarah Vaughan, administratrix 14 October, 1718. [7]

13 May 1728. Richard Vaughn, Sr. of Brunswick County sold to Robert Bolling 169 acres on south side of Appomattox River. Witnessed by John Fitzgerrald, John Epes and Fran. Epes - Hopewell. Recorded on 14 May, 1728. Description: between Theophilus Field (formerly Joseph [Willson] and Samuel Vaughn's line, next to Richard Vaughn and John Butler. [8]
