On 4 May 1897 Frank Douglas Vaughan was born in Dovedale, Nelson to Albert Vaughan and [[Win-5|Maud Win]. [1]
Prior to his enlistment in 1917, Frank belonged to the 12th Nelson Territorial Regiment. He was employed by his father and worked as a farmer at Waitapu.
He enlisted in WWI with the NZ Rifle Brigade - Rank Rifleman - Serial no 55653 and embarked 15 August 1917 on the Ruahine from Wellington to Glasgow, Scotland. Next of kin listed as Mrs Maude Vaughan. Frank spent 1 year, 174 days overseas. Due to illness Frank was discharged from service and was returned to New Zealand.
In 1919, he made application under the 'Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act 1917' on a block of land at Waitapu - sect 16 -blk 6 - being some 36 acres in size.
On 5 January 1921, his marriage to Olive Victoria Stent took place at her parent's home in Hamama, Takaka. Olive was the daughter of Sydney Oliver Stent and Annie Maria Hunter. Four children were born to Frank and Olive. They divorced in 1947. [2]
Frank farmed at Waitapu, Takaka, later moving to Nelson and became a Railway Surfaceman. During the 1940's Frank was living in Wellington and employed as a Labourer.
Frank returned to Nelson where he passed away on 14 June 1958 age 61 and is buried in the RSA section, Wakapuaka cemetery, BLK 3 PLOT 23.
