Biography

JAMES VAUGHAN, M.D. of Leicester; b. at Leominster 27 March 174o; d. at Leicester 19 August 1813, bur. at Wistow, M.I.

He m. at St. Martin's, Leic. 29 Dec. 1764, Hester dau. and coh. of John Smalley, Alderman of Leicester, and of Elizabeth his wife, dau. of the Rev. Sir Richard Halford, 5th Bart, of Wistow, [See Ped. of Halford, Bart, extinct, in Nichols' Leic. ii. 874; Hill's Market Harborough, 328; Burke's Extinct Bar. 238; Vis. Leic. 1619 and 1683, &c. John Smalley d. 1763, aet. 61;

Elizabeth (Halford) his wife d. 1772, aet. 69; M.I. at Nortonjuxta-Galby.] He had issue by his said wife, (who was b. 1741, and d. 2 April 1791, M.I. at Wistow,) 7 sons and 1 dau.:

(1) James, d. s. p. 29 May 1788; m. 7 June 1786 Mary Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Everard Buckworth, Bart. She rem. 1st to Rev. Calverley John Bewicke, of Hallaton Hall, rector of Hallaton-cum-Blaston & Loddington, (he d. 5 May 1843); & 2ndly to Capt. John Buckworth; & d. 1855.

(2) Sir Henry, of whom hereafter as Sir Henry Halford, Bart. (Seep. 136.)

(3) Sir John, of whom next.

(4) Very Rev. Peter, D.D. Mert. Coll. Oxon.; rector of Northenden, Cheshire; Warden of Merton Coll. 181o; Dean of Chester 182o; b. 1776; d. unm. at Oxford 25 April 1825.

(5) William Welby, of Jamaica; b. 1772, d. unm. 18o3.

(6) Sir Charles Richard; Fellow of All Souls, Oxon.; Secretary of legation & of embassy Spain 181o, & minister pleniopotentiary 1815; minister plenipotentiary to Switzerland 1823; envoy extraordinary to U. S. A. 1825; G.C.H. & P.C.; b. 2o Dec. 1774, & bap. at St. Martin's, Leicester, 1o Feb. 1775; d. 15 June 1849.
