Thomas “Tom” Benton Vaught was born December 21, 1858 in Caddo Gap, Montgomery Count, Arkansas. He was the third of the nine children of Silas Perron Vaught and Lucinda Caroline Tweedle. In 1878, he married Mary Clementine Rainwatetall (1857-1931), born in Black Springs, Montgomery County, Arkansas. They had nine known children all born in Arkansas. In 1893, the family lived on a farm across from Caddo Creek. Thomas had a grist mill there and a blacksmith shop. Later, he worked as a freighter (hauler) for a mercantile company.
In 1896, Thomas, his family, and his widowed sister Margaret Alice Vaught Hadaway travelled by covered wagons to Texas. Clementine and Thomas pursued a variety of work throughout the years. They ran a boarding house for lady college students at Gorman, Texas and had a tin shop that produced everything from coal shuttles to bathtubs to windmills to cellars. Thomas also worked as a cotton weigher and in the cotton gin.
Clementine had a paralyzing stroke in 1908; her unmarried daughter, Mattie, took care of her for 23 years and then kept house for her father until his death April 26, 1946. He was buried near Clementine at Terrace Cemetery, Post, Garza County, Texas.
