Notes for Gilbert Vaught

  • 1808 The "History of Muhlenberg County" contains a photo of a "wolf scalp" certificate issued to Gilbert Vaught by John Vaught and dated August, 1808.
  • Notes from Jean Rhoads Camas: I have always believed that Elizabeth Vaught Rhoads was the daughter of Gilbert Vaught and Mary Martin.for several reasons.
  • She named her first son 'Gilbert Vaught Rhoads.'
  • Gilbert Vaught, Sr., is buried in Sears Cemetery right at the foot of my 3rd gr-grandfather Barnabas W. Rhoads who, I suspected, as Gilbert 's grandson.
  • I have dug for everything I could find regarding Gilbert Vaught and found that he came, with John, his brother from Elk Lick Township in Somerset County, PA where Henry and most of the other Rhoads families originated and they came about the same time that Henry Rhoads and the other Rhoads came to Kentucky. It does not appear, however, that John Vaught ever lived in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County, PA. Perhaps before coming to Muhlenberg County he and his wife, Elizabeth Martin Vaught, stayed behind in Mifflin County to be near Elizabeth 's mother.
  • Gilbert Vaught was a soldier in the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania, and I wanted to prove his relationship to Elizabeth so that I could get recognition for him in the DAR, but no actual proof exists that I am aware. First, Elizabeth predeceased Gilbert. Second, Gilbert left no will, unlike his brother, John, who left a lovely will naming every one of his children. It was concluded, therefore, that other young adults in the county at that time were possibly the children of Gilbert and Mary Vaught and that possibility had to be explored.
  • Gilbert sold some acreage to Simeon Vaught who is believed to be his son (he was not listed as John's son). Finally, he "sold" all his remaining land to Gilbert C. Vaught and Moses F. Glenn (husband of his youngest daughter Mary M. Vaught) with the stipulation that they care for him, giving him housing, food, etc. for as long as he wished to stay with them.
  • For the first time I saw that David and Elizabeth had another son before they had Gilbert, and he is called "Simon Vaught Rhoads," born January 1802, so then I wondered who was "Simon Vaught?" I even wondered if he was her father instead of Gilbert; however, she did name her first daughter "Mary M." and I believe that was "Mary Martin" after her mother. That would be according to the naming practices of the time. Incidentally, the first boy should have been named "Henry" after David's father; but since they did not do that, perhaps Simon was named after Elizabeth's uncle who was killed by Indians while serving in Pennsylvania in the Revolutionary War. The second son was named GILBERT VAUGHT RHOADS, and according to tradition that shows "Gilbert Vaught" is, indeed, the father of Elizabeth Vaught.
  • I began suspecting in 1994 that Gilbert and John VAUGHT had married sisters. That fact has been verified with documents. They are the daughters of Johann Eberhart and Jacobena Elizabeth MARTIN of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. The list of Elizabeth and David's children was obtained from a secondary source, a published source with no documentation given. Somewhere out there may be an old bible, or perhaps it fell apart and was discarded. 2001, jrcamas@liii.com (Jean Camas)
  • See "Two Centuries of Brothers Valley" by Austin Cooper for more on these Vaughts. Simeon and Christian are mentioned in the book as going to Virginia.
  • The "Fite" shown as part of Gilbert Sr.'s name is totally erroneous .

Joseph Rhoads was the uncle of Gilbert’s son-in-law, David Rhoads.
  • Muhlenberg County Book of Court Orders, March 23, 1801, Gilbert Vaught claimed right to 298 acres on Pond Creek.
  • Gilbert Vought is buried in Sears Cemetery, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
  • According to the will in the Mifflin County Courthouse, Lewistown, Pa. proved on February 20, 1784, Eberhard Martin (of Derry Township, Cumberland County, Pa.) son, Christopher was exe cutor and received all of his land. Other heirs and recipients from will are: daughter, Barbara, daughter, Mary (married to Gilbert Vaught), daughter, Elizabeth (married to John Vaught), daughter, Rachel.

Vaught-396 and Vaught-1566 appear to represent the same person because: I created this profile with the erroneous idea that he was the father of William Washington Vaught If anyone has an idea as to who his father is please don't hesitate to respond.
RED FLAG. When half siblings appear this is OFTEN and auto generated error that can be fixed.
