Biography
John Paul Vogt 1680-1761
The man, the myth, the legend. I suppose it's fair to start the story at the beginning. For many of the thousands of Vaught's across the country, the beginning of our story is one man. John Paul Vogt, born sometime in or around 1680 in or near Frankfurt, Germany.
For any of you who've been at this quest for a while, you know the story: Johan Paulus Vogt brings his family (his wife, Maria Catherina, his two sons,
Johan Andreas and
Johan Gasper, and his two daughters,
Catherina Margaret and
Maria Catherina) across the Atlantic and arrives in Philidelphia in October, 1733.[1]
The first solid proof that this man and his family even existed at all is the ship's passenger list from October 11, 1733, showing the family among the other 50-odd German immigrants. This passenger list, printed in numerous books and available readily on the internet, is invaluable.
How can a simple document that just shows names on a ship be such a treasure trove? Well, this document shows us all kinds of information:
The ship's name was the Charming Betty, captained by John Ball.
The ship arrived from London (so we know they were at least in England for a bit) 62 passengers, split up into 15 families arrived on the Charming Betty.
The ship arrived in port on the 11th, but the passengers were officially imported on the 12th of October, 1733---from this we can deduce that the ship arrived late in the day, after the time when the captain could have arranged paperwork with the local courthouse.
The ship was likely small---most ships of the time that deposited Germans in Philadelphia carried over a hundred, some as many as three hundred passengers.
On the 12th, the heads of the families of the Charming Betty were taken before the local court, where in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor and other magistrates, the oath of loyalty to the Crown was administered and they became British subjects.
We know the ages of the passengers, which gives us the birth years as well (Johan Paulus 53, Maria Catherina 46, Johan Andreas 12, Johan Gasper 8, Catherina Margaret 18, Maria Catherina 16)
From the arrival date in October, we can figure at least 2 months at sea, up to possibly 4 or even 6 months. Ocean transit was fairly commonplace but highly unpredictable in the 18th century. Most voyages seemed to average a couple months at the minimum.
So it's fairly easy to imagine Johan Paulus Vogt and his family staggering off the ship they had been cooped up in for weeks and weeks, finally walking on dry land and thanking God for dilvering them safely across the Atlantic. And with those first footsteps off the ship onto American soil, our family is born.

John Paul was born in 1680 in Frankfurt, Germany. It is a family tradition that he came from Luckenberg, Germany. This small village is near Talfang which is between Trier and Cochem and near the Mosel River. He was a miller. John Paul and his wife Maria Catherina came to America on the "Charming Betty" arriving Oct. 11, 1733. They were listed on the passenger list as John Vogt 53, Andreas Vogt 12, Casper Vogt 16. John Paul made oath in open court that this is the first time of proving his importation into this Colony and that he imported Mary Catherine, his wife, John Andrew and John Casper(Gasper) his two sons and Catherine Margaret and Mary Catherine, his two daughters.
The old records include Vaught, Vought, Vault, Vot, Faut, Faught, Fogt, Full, Waht, Waught, Wocht, Nacht.
John Paul and his family arrived in Philadelphia in Oct., 1733 and by Jan., 1735 John Paul had his first land patent. From Oct, 1733 to Jan. 1735 he arrived at, settled on and probably built a house on his land in an area in the Northern Neck of Orange, Co. VA (what today is Madison and Culpeper Counties). John Paul's land adjoined the land of Christian Clements. Both John and Christian's land would today be in Madison Co., VA near the Culpeper Co. line, on State Route 609.
Christian Clements married one of John Paul's daughters, probably Catherine Margaret. The marriage probably took place before they moved to the Great Valley in 1744. John Paul may have attended the Hebron Lutheran Church which is still in use in Madison Co. John Paul may have moved to the Massanutten Mountain area between July, 1744 and Oct. 1744.
John Paul died at his home in the Shenandoah Valley in 1761. When he moved there, the county was Orange, When he died there the county was Augusta. Today the county is Rockingham. John Paul's will was dated Oct. 9, 1759 and was proved Aug. 18, 1761. His estate sale and appraisal was dated Sept. 10, 1761. Besides his sons, Andrew and Gasper, only one daughter, the one that married Christian Clements, is mentioned in John's will. Therefore, it is assumed that the other daughter died without issue prior to Oct. 1759, date of the will.

My wife and I recently took a trip back through time, we went to Va. and followed the Vaught's movements from the Culpeper area. Where we visited the Hebron church site, I must say it gave me a warm feeling to stand on the very site where John Paul Vaught stood in 1740, then to Wythe Co., Smyth Co. Our time limit did not allow us to take in all we wanted to although we did visit the Kimberling Lutheran Church site. As you know some of our Vaught's are on that Church's records. It appears that John Paul Vaught-96 is Not the son of Johannes Stephan Vogt-838 & Anna Christina Platz-135. These parents never left Königsbach & could not have given birth to a son in Frankfurt, Lückenburg, Thalfang or Coburg as appears on various family trees. The correct birth place should read Lückenburg, Bernkastel-Wittlich, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Frankfurt is 100 mi away, I researched John Paul Vaught, wife & 4 children, bet 1600s & 1733 when he entered the US, on Family Search, Ancestry, GeneaNet, MyHeritage & Geni, but couldnt find relationship to my Vogt-Platz family. I copied the LDS micro film #367717 for Königsbach & could not find any connection to John Paul or Johann Paulus.
