Biography

Nellie grew up in a poor family. She went to work, at a very young age, for the Montgomery family. In 1916, she married oldest son Clyde Montgomery. He died in 1929. In 1930, she married the youngest son Cort Montgomery. He died in 1940. Nellie remained a widow until she died in 1998. She was a staunch Democrat. When I was younger I liked to turn the conversation to politics and watch her become worked up. She referred to President Franklin D. Roosevelt as "Rosie". She was an independent, strong-willed woman. She had seen much heart ache and sorrow over her many years. She was 101 years and 6 months of age at her death.^[1]

Nellie Crystal Vaught was born September 7, 1896 in Barton Township, Gibson County, Indiana and died January 22, 1998 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. ^{[2] [3] [4]}She was the daughter of Thomas Judson Vaught and Julia Berdean Spencer.

1900 Census Nellie is living with father Thomas J Vaught, 39, mother Julia B Vaught, 27 and siblings: William Vaught, 11, Glen Vaught, 6, Nellie Vaught, 3, Lawrence Vaught, 2, Roy Vaught, 1/12. Other family members were Julia's mother Lucinda Spencer, 59, Julia's brothersWalter A Spencer, 22, and John Ireland Spencer, 19. All were living in Somerville, Barton Twp., Gibson County, Indiana. ^[5]

1920 Census Nellie is married to Clyde Montgomery and living in Smith Township, Posey County, Indiana with their only child, daughter Louisa Montgomery. ^[9]

1930 Census Nellie is widowed and living with her brother-in-law Cort Montgomery and her daughter Louisa Montgomery. ^[10]

Marriage

Nellie married Cort Montgomery, 19 September 1930 in Cynthiana, Posey County, Indiana. ^[11]

1940 Census, Nellie is widowed and head of household with her son Thomas Ashley Montgomery and daughter Pearl Ellen Montgomery. ^[12][13]
