Biography

In Seminole, Oklahoma when Ellen was 14 years old, she met and later married Leroy “Happy” Kingsland. She learned to dance at a nearby honky-tonk called Rainbow Gardens. Her father whipped her once for going to the Rainbow at her young age. She was whipped severely and her mother separated them. Ellen passed out, but before she did she said, “Daddy, I’m going back to the Rainbow.” The dance band playing at the time at the Rainbow Gardens was “Son Wallin and His Cavaliers”. Ellen’s first husband, Happy Kingsland, was a guitar player and singer, who entertained on the local Seminole radio station. There were no TV’s back then (early ‘30’s). They later moved to California, where they lived together for several years before separating, as Ellen couldn’t stay away from the dance halls.

Ellen worked in a defense plant in San Francisco, California during the day and often danced all night with sailors during WW II. Later, she relocated to Fort Worth, Texas, where she met and married Willie Howard “Bill” West of Blum, Texas. They lived together for several years in many locations across the US. Bill was an auto mechanic and Ellen was a waitress. They later divorced.

Ellen’s husbands also include Sam Daniels, from Louisiana, whom she married in Eunice, New Mexico; Johnny Causey, a cab driver from Fort Worth, Texas; James Kennedy of San Angelo, Texas; and Bruce Hart of Fort Worth, who passed away, leaving Ellen a widow.
