Simon Volkertse was born in the Netherlands in 1624.[1] Some accounts list his birthplace as Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.
Epperson cites a record that described Symon Volckerts (apparently Veeder) as a baker's apprentice from Esen, Holstein.[2]
The first mention of him in America is of Simon Volkertse Veeder, born in 1624, as a sailor belonging to the ship "Prince Maurice " in 1644, which ship plied between Amsterdam, Holland, and New Amsterdam (New York).[3] In 1652 he bought a lot of land and settled in New Amsterdam.[4] He sold that property in 1654 for thirty beaver skins; removed to Beverwyck and from thence to Schenectady in 1662. Symon Volkertsen Veeder was one of the original proprietors of Schenectady,[1] but later left the town to settle on land he owned on the Normals Kill (Normanskill Creek).[5]
In Schenectady he owned a tract on the great flat, numbered 9, containing twenty-four morgens, and a village lot on the north corner of State and Ferry streets.
In 1679, his Albany property was taxed to help maintain the stockade.[1]
In New Netherland he was known as a baker and was sometimes called "de bakker."
His wife was Engeltje. Some sources identify her as Engeltje Vrooman and state that they married in 1644 in New Amsterdam.
Baptisms of several children of "Simon Volkertse Veeder alias de Bakker" were recorded in Schenectady during the 1680s (specific dates not recorded):[3]

Simon Volkertse Veeder filed a will on January 8, 1696/97 (1697).[7] It mentioned his wife, Engeltie, and eight living children. The will also mentions land "on Normans Kil, called Tawassathaa, do. same in Sninnechtady". [8] The will passed probate in April 1713.[9] His children were:[6][10]
Pieter or Peter, born 1676.

Research Notes
Church records for Schenectady do not exist for events before 1694. Baptisms for Simon and Engeltje's children have not been found in Albany, where the earliest existing records begin in 1683.
Vader names Martine (Symons) Evertsen (abt.1676-1728) as Maria.[12] Maria, unlike her sisters, who are named with their husbands, is simply called Maria Symons. The marriage of Martine Simonsz wasn't recorded until November of 1797, almost 10 months after the will was written.[13]

I would like to add the two daughters of Simon, Magdalena and Maria. I have found no baptisms, but both are mentioned in Simon's will, Magdalena as the wife of william appell, (Willem Appel (abt.1660-aft.1737)) and Maria listed simply as Maria Symons.
Vedder-58 and Veeder-46 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. These matches have been reviewed by the New Netherland Settlers Merge Approval System, and the "Green" destination NNS profile is protected as PPP, and the "Merge Pending" profile is now ready and able to be merged into it. I saved the data to the bios. Thanks!
