Biography

Jane Ann Veeder was baptized on 28 May 1845 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Guilderland, New York, recorded as the child of Peter Veeder and Eleanor Mynderse.[1]

The 1850 U.S. census recorded her birth family in Guilderland, Albany County, New York. Her father, Peter Veeder, age 40, was a farmer with $4000 in real estate. Eleanor Veeder, identified on the record sheet as "wife," also was age 40. Children were Peter, 11; Isabell, 8; Jane, 5; and Maria, 2. The record also lists Sarah Cobry, age 18. All were born in New York.[2]

In 1865, the New York State Census recorded Jane Ann Veeder, age 20 and single, in her parents' household in Guilderland, New York. Peter Veeder, a farmer, and his wife Elnor Veeder were both age 54; Elnor had had six children. Other family members in the household were children Eisabeth Veeder, 22; Mariah Veeder, 17; and Elnor Veeder, 13. All were born in Albany County. Three servants also were recorded: William Pitchor, 24, born in Albany County; Thomas _____, 30, born in Ireland; and Zacariah Lagrange, 15, born in Albany County.[3]

Jane A. Veeder was married to John B. Kimmey[4][5] in about 1871 or 1872.[6][7]

In July 1875 the New York State Census recorded R. Kimmey, age 73 and a farmer, and his wife Sally E. Kimmey, 71, in Bethlehem, Albany County, New York. Living with them were their unmarried daughter Kate A. Kimmey, 39,[8] married son John B. Kimmey, age 31 and a boatman, daughter-in-law Jennie A. Kimmey, age 30, and grandchildren Mindert F. Kimmey, age 2 years and 10 months, and Rachel B. Kimmey, age 8 months. John B. Kimmey, Jennie, and their children were born in Albany County.[9]

The 1892 New York State Census recorded John B. Kimmey, 48, Jennie A. Kimmey, 46, and their children Myndert V. Kimmey, 19, Nellie M. Kimmey, 11, and Clarence Kimmey, 8, in Bethlehem, New York, with John's aunt Maria Kimmey, 83. John B. Kimmey was a postmaster.[10]

The 1900 U.S. Census record for Bethlehem, New York, recorded the Kimmey household members as John B. Kimmey, age 57 (born August 1842), wife Jane A. Kimmey, 55 (born May 1845); children Myndert V. Kimmey, 27 (born July 1872), Eleanor M. Kimmey, 19 (born September 1880), and Clarence Kimmey,16 (born December 1883); sister-in-law (to John) Eleanor Veeder, 48 (born September 1851, mistakenly coded as male); and servant (fa farm laborer) Elbridge Bushnell, 26. John and Jane had been married 29 years, and Jane had had five children, of whom three were living. John was a gardener, Myndert was a farm laborer, Clarence was at school, and Eleanor Veeder was a seamstress.[6]

The 1910 U.S. Census recorded John B. Kimmey, age 66, in Bethlehem, New York, with his wife Jennie A. Kimmey, 64. They had been married 37 years and Jennie had had five children, of whom three were living. Also in the home was their son Clarence R. Kimmey, 26, and John's sister-in-law (Jennie's sister) Nellie Veeder, 50. All were born in New York, as were their parents. John was a farmer in the garden farm business and Clarence was a "Ch" (interpreted as chauffeur) for a private family.[7]
