Marie Hélène Veilleux was born and baptized on 28 Jul 1872 in Saint-François-d'Assise parish in Beauceville, Québec, Canada. She was the daughter of Benoni Veilleux, farmer, and Celeste Fortin of this parish. Sponsors at Marie Hélène's baptism were Joseph Bolduc and Célina Huard; neither sponsor signed the register.

At age 26 Marie Hélène married Joseph Gilbert on 14 Feb 1899 in Saint-François-d'Assise parish in Beauceville. The couple received a dispensation for the fourth degree of consanguinity. There were four known children born into this marriage.
