James Veitch was born in Scotland.

1628 Birth and Parents

Mike Marshall places James Veitch's birth at 1628. [1]

While there has been considerable controversy regarding his parentage, no confirmed parentage has been established for him.

1652 Arrival

James Veitch was one of the first group of Puritans who settled in lower Calvert County under the leadership of Richard Preston about 1652. He received two grants of land on the south side of St. Leonard's Creek called "Veitch's Rest" and "Hatton's Cove." He was second in command of the Puritan Militia under Capt. Peter Johnson. He was sent to seize and arrest John Dandy, the early gunsmith of Calvert County who was accused of having murdered several persons. Lt. James Veitch accomplished the dangerous task of capturing this armed and desperate man and bringing him to Justice. [2]

Seeing little future for himself in England he received a modest land grant in Lord Baltimore's plantation while in London, and therefore had holdings when he sailed across in 1651[3]. James occupied his small parcel of patented land on the north bank of the Patuxent River's Saint Leonard Creek.

1653 First Sheriff of Calvert Co MD

Starting in 1653, Veitch was elected a deputy or "undersheriff." In this capacity during 1653 and 1654. Veitch's duties included serving on the grand jury, and he was called to act as ordinary juror at Calvert County Court. In 1655, he was sworn in again with the new high sheriff, Sampson Waring. James Veitch succeeded Capt. Waring as high sheriff in 1657.He continued as sheriff into 1658 and was a grand or petit jury foreman in five subsequent years. [4]

1656 Marriage to Mary Gakerlin

About 1656 in St. Leonards, Calvert County, Maryland, he married Mary Gakerlin, b. 1640, d. Aft 1686, Calvert County, Maryland (Age > 47 years) [1]

On 2 April 1666 Mary Veitch, age about 26, appeared in the Provincial Court (AM 57.73). The record mentions Stephen Clifton, dec'd., [5]

In 1667/7 James Veitch and his wife Mary appeared in the Provincial Court (AM 57.153, 169). [5]

Mary Gakerlin was an indentured servant brought to MD by Richard Keene. The normal period of servitude was about 4 years. James bought Mary from Richard: James Veitch conveyes one cow calf now in Ishmael Wright's plantation to Richard Keene, of Putuxent, planter; this document is dated 9/30/1657.

The marriage must have occured before this date because in a document dated 8/7/1658: Augt 7, 1658: James Veitch demands lands for the Transportation of Ann Kidde this year, and Mary Gakerlin, now his wife, bought from Richard Keene, MD Land Office, Annapolis, liber Q, folio 107

The arrangement at this time was that anyone paying for the passage of an indentured servant was given 50 acres of land. At the end of the|servitude, the indentured party was also given 50 acres of land. This is the land that James was asking for. James may have paid the passage of others: Warrant to James Veitch for 250 acres of land, liber 6, folio 33

First MD land record, Aug 11 1651. Received Certificate of Survey for his land in MD, 1658.

Mary GAKERLIN(202) (402)(374) died about 1690 in Calvert Co, MD. She was born bet 1633 and 1636 in Wales.

Research Notes

Robert Barnes

Robert Barnes [8] has an entry for James Veitch showing his father as Malcolm Vewitch of Muirdeen Scotland, supported by an article by Charles Lord in The American Genealogist:

Refs: A:L Charles M. Lord. An Illegitimate Line from Harold II of England to James Veitch of Calvert Co., MD. TAG 53:152-153. B: LDBR 2:521-522 Living Descendants of the Blood Royal. Count d'Angerville. Vol 1. (These volumes must be used with caution)

1. John Veitch (or Veach) of Dawick, Peebleshire, m. 29 Oct 1576, Janet Stewart, dau . of James and Katherine (Kerr) Stewart (96) of traquair. She descends from Harold II, King of England (A). John and Janet were the parents of (A, B), Malcom.

2. Malcolm Veitch of Muirdeen, Scotland, 2nd son of John (1) and janet, was b. c. 1590, and d. 1630. By an unidentifiede wife he was the fahewr of (A, B). James.

3. James Veitch, son of Malcom (2), was b. 1628 at Muirdeen, and d. 1681 in CV Co, MD. In 1658 he m. Mary Gakerlin. James immigrat3ed to MD by 1658 (MPL Q:39). He and Mary had at least one son. (B) Nathan, b. 1667, d. 1705.

Scottish Ancestry

Burke's Peerage, Ltd. lists Sheriff James Veitch, the immigrant, as a son of Malcolm Veitch, son of John "Vaitche," Laird (Lord) of Dawyck, Peebleshire, by his wife Janet Stewart, "an aunt of the first Earl of Traquair." [9]

James Veitch was born in 1628 amidst the turbulence of Scottish politics at the time of the Protestant Revolution. During Veitch's youth, his family - the house of Dawyck - fought on the side of King Charles as he battled Oliver Cromwell, a decision that placed them on the losing side.[10]

Disputed Parents

There is no documentary evidence to support the claim that James Veatch was the son of Malcom Veitch and his wife Katerina. This claim has been made in several published locations, including the 1974 book "We Veatches". This lineage is not recognized in Douglas Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry. To quote from a recent genforum post:

"Thirteen years ago, I posted a query to this board asking anyone (especially the Veitch Historical Society) for proof of the claimed Scottish ancestry of Sheriff James Veitch of 17th century Maryland. And none has been forthcoming.
"Sorry, but information in the book We Veitches is NOT proof. And I don't mean smoking-gun proof. The book doesn't even offer a smidgen of circumstantial evidence. It shows an ancient Scottish Veitch pedigree containing the name James (at about the right age), and proclaims him Sheriff James Veitch of Maryland.[11]

Perhaps this researcher overstates his claim. The circumstantial evidence consists of a man in Maryland of the right age AND social position, with the same extremely rare name as the name of a man in a Scottish pedigree about whom nothing else is known, while there is no other known candidate to be the same person. All that appears sufficient to establish the plausibility of the claim that James Veitch, son of Malcolm of Scotland, was the same as James Veitch the Maryland sheriff.

Prospective Magna Carta Ancestry

In this G2G discussion, it was noted that while James Veitch was listed as a descendant of surety barons by Burke's American Families with British Ancestry (1939), Douglas Richardson's 2nd edition of Magna Carta Ancestry did not mention him (he was listed as a footnote in the first edition). Note that Burke is not considered a reliable source (see the Unreliable Sources section of the Magna Carta Project's Reliable Sources page).
The "Prospective" research done by the Magna Carta Project was part of a subproject that has been retired. A July 2020 review of profiles in the category "Prospective Magna Carta Gateway Ancestors" led to the removal of this profile from it, based on James's relationship with the profile attached as his father being marked "Uncertain" and the Disputed Parents section. ~ Noland-165 17:41, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Defense of Royal Lineage

Ray Isbell defends the royal lineage with this statement:

The pros are:
(1) Acceptance by the authorities cited (and the law*).
(2) Most likely based on his stature in Colonial Maryland being circumstantial evidence of education and high birth.
(3) Also a deposition in which James Veitch of Maryland gave his age showing he was born circa 1628, the same age as James Veitch of Scotland. There was NO Veitch named James earlier than this one, contrary to misstatements on the internet made by detractors of this lineage.
The cons are:
(1) Lack of records proving the two James Veitches are the same man.
(2) No contemporaneous record stating that James Veitch of Maryland was born in Scotland (although several very early non-published family histories said he was from Scotland). He apparently went first to England and then Maryland.
(3) If he had named children Malcolm or Katarina for his parents, we would have more confidence in this lineage. But for lack of records, for all we know he had unknown children who died young.
The argument regarding the strength of proof (or lack thereof) of Maryland immigrant James Veitch’s parentage is subjective and open to interpretation. BUT-:: 1. It was the judgment of the Lord Lyon of Scotland that James Veitch of Maryland was indeed the same James Veitch born in 1628 at Muirdean, Roxburghshire, Scotland, when His Honor the Lord Lyon issued a special coat-of-arms to the Veitch Historical Society of America, founded by descendants of Sheriff James Veitch, which was an adaptation of the arms that the said James Veitch himself would have been entitled to bear under Scots heraldic law. Arms granted 11 May 1983 by Malcolm R. Innes, Baron of Yeochrie, Commander of the Royal Victoria Order, Writer to Her Majesty's Signet, Lord Lyon King of Arms. This is law in Great Britain.
2. Burke’s Peerage, Ltd. Burke's American Families with British Ancestry (1939), p.2951 and Burke's Landed Gentry of Great Britain, 16th Edition (1939), p.2951, published simultaneously, were the first official publications identifying the parentage of James Veitch of Maryland. Burke’s Peerage publications have not been without errors in the past, but the official genealogists at Burke’s Peerage deemed Sheriff James Veitch of Maryland the same James Veitch born at Muirdean 1628.
3. The National Genealogical Society. Walter Lee Shepard, "Descendants of the illegitimate Sons & Daughters of the Kings of Britain," in The National Genealogical Society Quarterly (vol. 62, pp. 182-91), shows the same Scottish ancestry of James Veitch of Maryland. The three citations above, recognized authorities in Scotland, England, and the USA, constitute proof.
Later publications of serious reputation, although not considered proof, include:
The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States, by Gary Boyd Roberts (1993), page 111;
Plantagenet Ancestry (2004) by Douglas Richardson & Kimball G. Everingham, p.663;
Magna Charta Ancestry (2005) by Douglas Richardson, Kimball G. Everingham, p. 151.
[Note that newer editions have omitted James Vetch.]

This profile appears to be heavy on discussion of his Scottish origins, but lighter on his significant activities in Maryland, so I added material from Mike Marshall's Colonial site. Since WikiTree's Style Guide only favors specific major headings, I arranged the material in chronological order under subheadings. Because it is all still controversial, I moved everything about his origins to Research Notes; appropriate material can easily be moved back when it is confirmed with reliable sources.

The exception to this is his year of birth which is confirmed by Maryland Provincial Court appearances.

I am intrigued by the reference to his arrival with Puritans in 1652; migration of Puritans to Maryland in this period was primarily from Virginia where the Anglican church establishment favored expelling them. It would be interesting to search for any traces of James Veatch in Virginia to see if he came first to Virginia before Maryland.

While WikiTree has not weighed in on it, I favor a separate section for children at the end of the Biography, because it is where this generation connects to the next. Given the importance which many ascribe to descent from Veatch, there needs to be further research to document which are really James Veatch's children, At the moment we simply have three lists -- those from two different sources, as well as the list currently connected on WikiTree.

Much more work is needed on this profile. Given the controversies, there needs to be an emphasis on finding the most reliable sources by current standards.

Colin,

Found him in military as stated with Findagrave.

MILITARY RECORD 1645-47: Major Gen. David Leslie led the Scots horsemen aiding Cromwell's Puritans to victory over Catholic King Charles in the English Civil Wars. Gen. Leslie's regiment included John Stewart (1599-1659, the Earl of Traquair, a Catholic and first cousin of Malcolm Veitch of Muirdean (ref., History of the Church and State of Scotland by Andrew Stevenson, p. 544). 1646: James Veitch was Quartermaster of Major-General David Leslie's Regiment (Papers relating to the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant, 1643-1647, Volume 1 [1917], by Charles Sanford Terry, p. liv; Publications of the Scottish History Society, Vol. 16, pub. By T. and A. Constable). Conclusion: James Veitch, the Quartermaster serving under the Earl of Traquair, was most likely the James Veitch who was a son of Lord Traquair's first cousin Malcolm Veitch and who afterwards disappears from Peeblesshire records.

Why is there no uncertain mother for James. Malcom's wife was Katarina Veitch-20. Why not attach her as uncertain mother?

Here list of resources I found on James Veitch maybe it will help.

I would like to add back Malcolm Veitch-14 as the "uncertain" father of James Veitch. I'm the one who originally detached Malcolm, back before we had the "uncertain" tag, which (in my opinion) is perfect for this case. Perhaps one of the profile managers could add back Malcolm as James's "uncertain" father?

hi, i am researching James Veatch, and have a few links that might be of interest, have you checked out the following page, it has lots of referees to James, and his Scottish heritage. http://www.jackmasters.net/masttvf.html

also the i just looked at the Veatch historical societies page, and they are now claiming James Veatch the sheriff as a decedent, if this is true this would lead me to a double line one on my mothers side, and one on my fathers side to king James Stewart the IV. just thought it might help/

Hello, I've started a G2G thread on whether James Veitch and others should be recognized as Gateway Ancestors: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/154895/magna-carta-project-new-gateway-ancestors?show=154916#a154916
