Dr. Samuel I. VENABLE was born on 23 May 1790 in Prince Edward Co., Virginia. He died on 11 May 1857 in Callaway Co., Missouri. Samuel studied medicine early in life. About 1832, Samuel and family left Virginia and located in Chariton Co., Missouri, where they lived for three years. They relocated in Livingston Co., Missouri about 1835, remaining there about six years. Though trained as a physician, Samuel labored as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. This changed in 1838 when the Mormon insurrection dramatically intervened in the lives of all residents of Livingston and adjoining counties. Dr. Venable signed this sworn affidavit:
"This is to certify that I was called upon last night to wait upon a lady who was about to increase her family. She had travelled as she told me about eight miles in labour to get from the Mormons, who were engaged in driving off the people, plundering and robbing their homes. There was another lady who stopped at the same camp ground, whose baby was but four days old. I was also at Mr. White's this morning, who lives in Livingston County, who was yesterday very much injured in property by the Mormons. They had plundered the house, taken clothes and other articles, destroyed all their bee stands, taken off drawing chains, log chains, &c. The quantity of oats, fodder and corn taken from White's must have been considerable, as they fed about two hundred horses, leaving on the ground a great deal of oats." Given under my hand this 22nd October, 1838, Samuel Venable.
Rev. Dr. Venable performed at least one marriage ceremony in Livingston Co. in 1839. He moved from Livingston Co. to Daviess Co., Missouri, about 1841 but eventually moved to Callaway Co. Parents: Jacob Michaux VENABLE and Mary VENABLE.
