Thebaud de Verdun was the third, but eldest surviving, son of John de Verdun and his first wife Margery.[1][2] He was born in about 1248[1][2]: he was said to be 23 at the Inquisition Post Mortem of his brother Nicholas in 1271, and 26 at his father's IPM in 1274).[2] He was his father's main heir.
In 1274, Thebaud was granted his parents' share of the Lacy lands in England and Wales that had been given to his brother, Nicholas, who died in 1271.[1][2] He inherited substantial lands in County Meath, Ireland and was frequently in Ireland.[1][2] In England he held lands in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire.[1][2]
In 1275 Thebaud and other lords with Irish interests granted Edward I duties on the expert from Ireland of wool and hides.[1][2]
In 1278-9 he was accused of ordering his men to seize animals belonging to the Prior of Llanthony Prima, Wales and take them to his castle at Ewyas Lacy in Herefordshire.[1]
He served with English armies in Wales and Scotland and was summoned to fight overseas in 1297.[2]
In 1291 he became caught up in a dispute between the Earls of Hereford and of Gloucester, and this led to his imprisonment (Douglas Richardson says he was found guilty of high treason[1]) and his being deprived for a time of Ewyas Lacy: he recovered it, and was freed, on payment of 500 marks.[1][2]
Thebaud was summoned to Parliament from 1295 to 1309, and this is regarded as conferring on him the title Lord Verdun.[1][2]
Before 6 November 1276 Thebaud married Margery (or Margaret) de Bohun, widow of Robert de W___ and daughter of Humphrey de Bohun and Eleanor de Braose.[1][2] She brought him lands in Gloucestershire.[1] They had eight children:
Thebaud died at Alton, Staffordshire 24 August 1309 and was buried at Croxden Abbey, Staffordshire.[1][2] The subsequent Inquisition Post Mortem (writ dated 28 Aug 1309 - 3 Edw. II) found his son, Theobald, aged 28 was his next heir.[3]
