Biography

1776 Project
Private John Vest served with Bedford County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
John Vest is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A209369.

John Vest was born in Powhatan, Virginia in 1750, and his family relocated to Buckingham, Virginia when he was about nine years old. The family then moved to the area of Bedford that is now Campbell, Virginia a couple years later, where he remained until 1789 except for his time spent serving in the Revolutionary War.[1] In 1789, he moved to Bedford, where he lived until he died in 1835.[2] He died intestate (no will), but a chancery suit over his estate revealed the names of all of his heirs:[3][4]

  1. Edward Davidson and Nancy his wife
  2. Samuel Harris and Rebecca his wife
  3. Joseph Acton and Polly his wife
  4. James Vest
  5. Betty Cobb
  6. John Vest
  7. Joshua Vest
  8. William Vest

Research Notes

Many Conflated John Vests

Almost none of the children attached to this profile on 4 Aug 2023 appear to have been children of the Rev War vet who died in Bedford in 1835.[3] The heirs of this John Vest were not the children of Agnes (Davidson) Vest, and it very clear from his Rev War pension application that this could not have been the son of John Daniel Vest I (1705-1765), who appears to have lived his entire life as a large landowner in Chesterfield, rather than a renter or farmhand bouncing from county to county for at least two decades. It is possible that John Daniel Vest's son was the Rev War vet by the same name who claimed to have entered duty as a resident of Chesterfield, Virginia while residing in Crawford, Missouri in 1833.

In the 1810 Census, there were three John Vests living in Franklin and a fourth in Bedford:[5]

  1. John Vest and one female, both over age 45
  2. John D Vest age 26-44 and one female age 16-25
  3. John Vest head of household with 1m 45+, 1m 26-25, 2m <10, 1f 16-25 & 1f <10
  4. John Vest (Bedford) 1m 45+, 1m 26-44, 1m 16-25, 1m 10-15, 1m <10, 1f 45+, 3f 16-25, 1f 10-15

John D Vest mortgaged personal property to John P Claytor in Bedford on 29 Nov 1821 to pay a debt to Henry Rakes; This John could sign his name.[6]

John Vest bought 50 acres on Island Branch in Bedford from James & Jane Echols in 1826.[7]

It is unlikely that this was the same John who served in the War of 1812.[8][9] This Rev War vet would have been age 62-65 by that time.

The Edward Davidson who married Nancy Vest was a brother of the Mosby Davidson who married a Miss Tankersley. They were sons of Sarah Davidson who was a daughter of the older Edward Davidson who married Agnes Mosby. Sarah may have had those sons out-of-wedlock since their last name was Davidson….and since the 1793/1794 Will of the older Edward Davidson mentioned something like “….should Sarah ever marry.” If there is a living male Davidson who is out of either of the above sons of Sarah, I wish he would take the Y DNA test. The older Edward Davidson was clearly a member of DNA Family 10 at the Davidson DNA Project.

John Vest of Franklin County, VA and John Vest of Bedford are two difference Rev War Soldiers.

The parents for these men are confused. I am unsure who is the son of whom and looking for actual proof. John Vest who died in Franklin County lived in Buckingham County, VA when he joined the war and he fought in the Battle of Guildford Count House in NC. After 1810 he does not show on the census records for Franklin County, VA. Interesting, the 1810 Census shows him as John D Vest. This John Vest married to Agnes Davidson We don't have a death date on this John Vest. I have several deeds including a deed gifting possessions to some of the children. We have no pension for this John Vest however, we do have a statement he did in Franklin County Courthouse that proves him a soldier

There is another John Vest born in C 1750 and died in c 1835 that was a Rev War soldier with a verified Pension. The other John Vest lived in Powhatan, Virginia. This John Vest lived and died in Bedford County after the war.

Given the fact that John Vest of Franklin County Virginia lists his name as John D Vest, does this mean that his parents are John D. and Ann Rakes/Bakes Vest??? Then who were the parents of John Vest of Bedford. John Vest of Bedford lived longer than John Vest of Franklin. I have done a chart on both of these men to try to figure this out and there is some interesting info that comes out to try to sort this out.
