3 de septiembre de 1685: "En la villa de Aguascalientes...en la parroquial, bauticé y puse los santos óleos á María, morisca, hija legítima de Francisco Montes y de María Jiménez; fue su madrina María de Santillán."[2]
In 1695, her family moved to New Mexico as part of the Juan Páez Hurtado Expedition, bringing new colonists from Zacatecas.[3] The expedition was rife with corruption. Since families received more money than single men, Paés Hurtado would list children from large families with single men to get the family payout and pocket the extra money.[4] In the list of colonists, María de las Nieves, her sister María de la Concepción, and her brother Domingo were named as the nieces and nephew of José Antonio Romero.[3]
Her first husband (there may have been an earlier marriage based on her age) was Domingo Romero de Pedraza, married about 1710. They had one known daughter, Juana Teresa. A son, Antonio, is mentioned in the paperwork when María's parents donated some cattle to their children in 1715.
"It is our will that the part to which our daughter Maria Vigil is entitled, we give to her son Antonio Romero, our grandson…"[5]
"1722 (No. 7) Santa Fe. JOSE TENORIO (24), n. of the city of Zacatecas living in Santa Fe for 3 yrs., son of Nicolas Tenorio, deceased, and Maria de Herrada, and MARIA VIGIL (34), widow of Domingo Romero de Pedraza who died fighting the French (Villasur Expedition), daughter of Teniente de Capitan Francisco Montes Vigil and Doña Maria Jimenez de Anciso… Pair married, Feb. 9, 1722…"
Like her baptism record, the name used on all other documents is "Maria Montes Vigil" with one exception. On the list of colonists for the Páez Hurtado group, there are two daughters, María de la Concepción (age 11) and María de las Nieves (age 9).[3] Going by age, this baptism record[1] could be for either woman. However, it is not known which daughter married Domingo Martín Romero de Pedraza and José Tenorio. At this time, we need to merge the three profiles under the name María Montes Vigil and if a source is found distinguishing which sister this is, her full given name can be added then, along with adding a separate profile for the sister.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with María by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with María:
Montes Vigil-44 and Montes Vigil-13 appear to represent the same person because: See Montes Vigil-13 for full explanation. There are two sisters with the same name with no source distinguishing which sister married Romero de Pedraza and Tenorio. Still need to merge the duplicate profiles.
Vigil-490 and Montes Vigil-13 appear to represent the same person because: There are two sisters, María de la Concepción Montes Vigil and María de los Nieves Montes Vigil.
Her correct surname should be Montes Vigil. Also, the rejected match with Montes_Vigil-13 should be researched and looked at again, since the parents match and the birth/death dates are pretty close.
This profile should be merged with Montes-269 as this is the same person as Vigil-490 (Maria de los Nieves). Also, the name should be "Maria Montes Vigil" not Maria de los Nieves Montes Vigil. as there is no documented source as to which "Maria" married Domingo Romero de Pedraza. Her father Capt. Francisco Montes Vigil married to Maria Jimenez d' Ancizo had two daughters named Maria. As seen in page # 39, testimony of The Juan Páez Hurtado expedition of 1695, Fraud in Recruiting Colonists for New Mexico by John B. Colligan (C) 1995 Univ NM Press, Maria de los Nieves & Maria da la Concepcion are both daughters. However, both always went by Maria Vigil. So there is no way to know positively which Maria is which, but we do know their parents. As in Diligencias Matrimoniales or Pre-nuptial Investigation "February 6, 1722 (No. 7) Santa Fe. Her second marriage to Jose Tenorio, clearly states who she was with both husbands and her Parents.
Vigil-490 and Montes Vigil-13 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles seem to be of the same person. The Vigil-490 profile seems to be more accurate showing only one husband, who I believe was Domingo Martin Romero de Pedraza.
