Name: Vincent Voisin. Vincent Voisiné. Vincent Voisinet.
Note: Vincent Voisin's surname is written as "Voisin" in most civil records for the births of his children. However he signed his name on these records as "Voisinet." His father Ludwig (in German) or Loÿs (in old French) or Louis (in English), is recorded as "Voisiné" on civil records in Balschwiller, France. The suffix -é is equivalent to -et, and generally refers to a diminutive form of a noun. I infer the family surname was originally Voisiné, or the equivalent form, Voisinet, pronounced WA-san-ay. It was usually written Voisin, pronounced WA-san in French, or as VOY-sin in America. Although the Alsace region today is in France, residents have historically spoken a dialect of German there.
Born 22 JAN 1766. Balschwiller, Alsace, France. [2] [3]
Died 20 FEB 1818. Reppe, Franche-Comté, France. [4]
Note: While living at Reppe, France Vincent Voisin's occupation was listed as "laboureur" or "cultivateur" on the birth records of his children. He was a farmer or farm hand at that time. Sometime later the family moved to Felon, France, where he was a "meunier" or miller.
Felon may be derived from “foulon” or foulard, a lightweight plain-woven or twilled silk usually decorated with a printed pattern. The mill may therefore have been a textile mill rather than a grain mill. Maps show no river by it. Vincent may have worked at the mill along with his wife and daughter. They both died the same day at the mill. There could have been an accident, or perhaps both succumbed to an illness. Interestingly Vincent’s grandson, Alexander August Voisin, would become a tailor in Belfort, perhaps due to his grandfather’s involvement in the textile industry.
Occupation: 1795–1807 Reppe, Franche-Comté, France. [5] Laboureur or cultivateur (farmer).
