Biography

Birchtilo was Graf im Breisgau at least since 990 when he is first mentioned in the records. In 998 he accompanied emperor Otto III on his second Italian campaign being instrumental in the capture of antipope Johannes XVI.[1] As reward he received the market privileges for the town of Villingen. According to some sources he was the husband of Berta von Büren,[2] others claim Landolt von Altenburg as her husband.[3][4] According to Heyck[2] he was dead by 14 Jul 1006 when Adalbero appeared in the records Graf im Breisgau.

Von Thurgau-4 and Habsburg-22 appear to represent the same person because: No family at this time and place with 3 sons named Berthold. Maybe Von_Thurgau-4 got mixed up with Von_Villengen-1, Bezelin (Berthold) von Villingen who also became Graf im Thurgau after 991 according to Eduard Heyck: Geschichte der Herzöge von Zähringen. But filiation and death date are those of Habsburg-22.

Von Breisgau-2 and Habsburg-22 appear to represent the same person because: There are no families in the area at that time that had 3 Bertholds as sons. Both have incorrect LNAB but Habsburg-22 has the family connections and Von_Breisgau-2 is an empty shell.

Could his LNAB be changed to Breisgau? I would then initiate a merge with his two "brothers".
