Biography

Notables Project
Peter Vroom Jr. is Notable.

For some period surrounding the year 1817, future Governor Vroom lived in Sussex County, New Jersey and was active in religious affairs of the community. On February 19, 1817, Peter D. Vroom, Jr. was secretary at a meeting of Sussex residents in Newton (then Sussex County) concerning the newly formed Auxiliary Bible Society of Sussex County. He was in fact the first Corresponding Secretary of the Society and was one of three men who wrote its Constitution. Sometime before the 1830 census, possibly when he was first elected Governor of New Jersey, he returned to Somerset County. On June 12, 1867, however, he revisited Newton (now Warren County) and delivered an address at the semi-centennial of the Sussex County Bible Society.

Peter is found in the 1850 census with his second wife, daughter from his first marriage, and children from his second marriage, as follows ...

1850 Census of Trenton, Mercer Co., NJ, p. 239
Peter D. Vroom, age 58, b. in NJ, Counsellor at Law
Maria M. Vroom, age 35, b. in NJ
Maria Vroom, age 24, b. in NJ
Peter D. Vroom, age 8, b. in NJ
Garrett H. D. W. Vroom, age 6, b. in NJ
James W. Vroom, age 3, b. in NJ
Gouverneur R. Vroom, age 1, b. in NJ

Peter, both his wives, his daughter, and one son are found memorialized at findagrave.com. A partial genealogy of his forebears and biographical sketch of his father were written by his son Garret and published posthumously by the Somerset County Historical Society in 1916.
