Biography

At the time of the 1891 Census, James family was living in Newtown Street, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, where his father was working as a draff agent (Draff is a grain husk by-product of the distilling industry). James was the youngest of seven children in the household, aged from 18 to 2 years old.

In the 1901 Census, twelve year old James was living in his parents' home Barrhill, Colmonell, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the youngest of three children in the home, and only person to be born in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire. All others recorded as having been born in Lanarkshire, Scotland. His father, Andrew, and elder brother Andrew were both listed as butchers. [1]

James Waddell was a master butcher with a shop in Barhill, Ayrshire, Scotland. The house was above the shop. He had a horse and cart for making deliveries. James married Annie Drummond. They had four boys, Andrew, Charles and James and John. James passed away in 1923.
