Death : c.1775 Rowan, NC, USA[2] or 2 May 1775 in Rowan, NC, USA[1]
Notes
The family history published by Robert Porcaro et al[3] discusses at some length the difficulty of confirming details of this family, given the many different variations in spelling of names. It's difficult to navigate this book or to locate references, but it does give that John "was born in 1691 in Oberalben, Kusel, Rheinland-Pfalz, Prussia (aka Germany) and died on 2 May 1775 in Lexington, Rowan County, North Carolina, USA", and identifies his children as :
Johann Jacob ("Old" Jacob) b.1717 in Bingen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany and d.1799 Rowan, NC, and apparently had administration of his father's estate.
Hans Jans b.1720 in Rheinland, Germany and d.1786 York, SC
John b.1722 in Rheinland-Pfalz and d.1775 Rowan, NC
Baptism: "Baden and Hesse Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1502-1985" Ancestry Record 61060 #1321906 (accessed 7 December 2021) Joh Sebastian Wagner baptism on 24 Apr 1691, child of Hanß Jacob & Barbara, in Grötzingen, Preußen, Baden.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
This "John Wagner" is supposedly the father of Old Jacob Wagner 1717 in NC and Jans Waggoner 1717 in SC. There is a few obviously issues like one brother went by "Wagner" and the other "Waggoner". And both seem to be called "Jacob". One is from Germany and the other from the Netherlands. Maybe that is all just errors in the documentation.
The bigger issue is that in FamilyTree Y-DNA (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/wagner?iframe=ycolorized) the "Jans Waggoner" line is different haplogroup than the "Old Jacob Wagner" line (R-FT13613 vs. R-M269 (Lineage J1)). So, they are not related.
This profile is in need of references to explain why he is the father of either of these people.
I have postponed all merges of the profiles for sons named Jans & Jacob until this is better understood and straightened out.
This profile of the supposed parent is basically unsourced. If any interested parties can find any sources for this man or his children, that would be a great start.
I've formatted the "sources" from the original profile; ordinarily I'd delete things like OneWorldTree, but I didn't want to be too heavy-handed with a profile for a family I'm not familiar with. I've added one published genealogy as a new source, but it needs more work to verify the details, since the book is a little difficult to navigate and it's not easy to find the citations.
Regarding the y-DNA tests : The public view shows only one kit in the R-M269 (J1) line associated with Jans. Is it possible that there has been an NPE in that tester's line?
