Helena married Henry Glover about 1640. They had 7 children: Mary, Mercy, Hannah, John, Abigail, Abigail, and Sarah. Helena died 1 March 1697/8.[1]
Her 1620 birth year is an estimate based on her husband's 1616 birth year, and the 1641 birth year of their first child, Mary Glover.
The inventory of Helena Glover of New Haven is not dated and is recorded in the April 1698 court session at New Haven. A distribution agreement was signed by the heirs of her estate on 28 April 1698.[2]
What was the maiden name of Ellen/Helena, the wife of Henry Glover? It appears that we really don’t know. Researchers have speculated for years about Ellen/Helena’s maiden name, considering at various times the surnames Wakeman, Russell, Davis, and Cooper.
Donald Lines Jacobus, in his Families of Ancient New Haven, initially indicated that she was likely the sister of William Russell.[3] In an Additions and Corrections section of FANH [4] Jacobus said that it was “formerly supposed” that she was a Wakeman, but that “wills published in the Wakeman Genealogy make it clear that she was not.” He explained that the previously noted connection to William Russell was hypothetical, indicated by being placed in brackets in the text. He then suggested it “is perhaps more likely that she was sister of William Davis who m Martha Wakeman, and whose da. m William Russell.” Jacobus then noted the various relationships that contributed to his thoughts that she might be a Davis. In a later Additions and Corrections entry[5], based on comments from a reader, Jacobus speculated on the relationship of Henry and Helena Glover to Thomas Cooper of Springfield.
Torrey [6] indicated that Ellen/Helena and Henry were married about 1640, providing only a death date (1698) for her and showing for her maiden name as [Russell/Davis/Wakeman?/Cooper?]. A review of Torrey’s sources shows that most of them did not even suggest a maiden name. One, Powers-Banks Ancestry, by Wm. H. Powers (1921) [7] refers to Ellen/Ellinor multiple times, and refers to various relationships of the Glover family with that of the Wakeman, Davis, and Russell families.
Robert Charles Anderson seems to favor the connection with the Cooper family in his discussion of various men named Henry Glover[8], commenting that "she was related in some way to Thomas Cooper of Springfield." Because Henry did not appear in New Haven until 1641, Anderson provides only limited information about him.
Based on that information, Helena has been removed as the daughter of Francis Wakemen and Anne Goode, and as the sister of William Russell.
