Biography

Henry Forster Walden was born in Feltwell, Norfolk, England, 20 April 1825, the son of Robert Searles Walden, the Elder and Jane Forster. Henry was baptised with two of his siblings 19 July 1837 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Thetford about 12 miles from Feltwell. Henry was 15 years old. Known as 'Schemer' Walden, the Rev. Daubeney in his 'little blue booklet' specifically refers to his aptness in scheming and making things. Henry is credited with building the Mission Hall in the village which is adjacent to his house, The Laurels, Hill Street, Feltwell.

He married Ann Gee, a local girl in 1857 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Thetford. By 1871, Ann had borne him four children and they had moved into The Laurels. In the Spring of that year Ann gave birth to their fifth child, a daughter, Edith Gee Walden. Baby Edith survived a few months. Ann did not. She was 37 years old. Both Ann and Edith were laid to rest in the garden of The Laurels.

Six months later he married Eliza Palmer (Smith), a widow, at a Baptist chapel in Cambridge. Henry and Eliza emigrated to New Zealand, on the ship Strathcaro, with Henry's four children. [1]

After Eliza's death, Henry married for a third time in 1904, a widow named Emma Garratt (Page). Henry died 20 September,1905, Onehunga, New Zealand. His death certificate describes him as "Gentleman of Onehunga".
