Biography

William Waldegrave, Knt., of Smallbridge and Lindsey, Suffolk, Walthamstow and Wormingford Hall, Essex, etc., Knight of the Shire for Suffolk, Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk 1550-1551[1]

William, first son of George Waldegrave and Anne Drury,[1] was born 2 August 1507 at his maternal grandfather's house in Suffolk.[2]

On 7 July 1528, a settlement was made for the marriage of William and Julian Raynsford, daughter and heiress of John Raynsford, Knt. of Colchester and Bradfield, Essex,[2] and his second wife, Margaret Ilam.[1] They had one son and four daughters,[1][3] including:

  • William, MP, born ca. 1540, married first to Elizabeth Mildmay, second to Grizelda, daughter of William Lord Paget. He died on 25 August 1613.[2]
  • Dorothy, who married Arthur Harris, Esq.[1]

William was knighted at the Coronation of Anne Boleyn,[1] on 25 May 1533.[2] He was later the captain of two hundred men in France and, in 1540, he was sent with a group of knights and nobles to meet the king's new wife, Anne of Cleves, at Blackheath.[1] In 1542, he went on a mission to Scotland with the Duke of Norfolk,[1] two years later he captained 60 men in the French campaign and in 1545 was elected to Parliament.[2]

Other offices held: Justice of the peace, Suffolk ?1531, 1532-death; commissioner of tenths of spiritualities 1535, coastal defence 1539, relief 1550, goods of churches and fraternities 1553; other commissions 1534-death; sheriff, Norfolk and Suffolk 1550-1551.[2]

Sir William Waldegrave died on 12 December 1554 at Calais, France, and was buried at Ste. Marie, Calais, with an epitaph at Bures St. Mary, Suffolk.[1][2] He made his will on 8 November 1554 and it was proved in October 1555.[2]
