Biography

Caroline was born after 1820. Caroline Walker ... She passed away before 1920. [1]

DEATH OF MRS. SHIPLEY - Clinton lost one of its oldest as well as one ofits mot highly esteemed residents on Saturday by the demise of Mrs. Shipley, widow of the late John Shipley, at the age of 72 years. Her death was not unexpected as she had been in an unconscious condition for several days the result of an apoplectic stroke, which occurred while visiting her daughter Mrs. Thomas Gibbings. That she had the warm esteem and respect of an exceedingly large circle of acquaintances is testified in the most unmistakeable manner, by the attendance at Ontario St. Church during the funeral obsequies. Born in Bath, Somersetshire, she came to this country with her parents when only three years old, the family settling at Stapleton. Here she gew to womanhood and about the year 1854 was married to the late John Shipley, they residing for many years in the house at present occupied by Mr. D. Shanahan, her husband then owning what is called the Andrews farm close to town. Subsequently they moved to the Huron road, a short distance east of town, her husband passing away about 21 years ago. She continued to reside at the farm with her son George up to about 18 months ago, when she went to keep house for her son William who had recently lost his wife. She was the mother of seven daughters and three sons; one of the daughers died in infancy and two others after they had reached young woman's estate. Mrs. Shipley was one of the first members of the Bible Christian Church of town, and has every since remained a faithful and efficient member thereof; her love for church service being shown in the fact that in early life she frequently walked to Harpurhey, a distance of eight miles to attend service, and her zeal and interest in religious matters is further evidenced in the fact that she had remained a teacher in the Ontario Street [Church] S.S. up to the time of her death. The funeral took place on Monday, the remains being taketn to Ontario St. Church where service was conducted by the pastor Rev. Dr. Cook, assisted by Rev. Dr. Medd of Hensall, and Rev. Mr. Wade. The church was crowded, many of those present coming from a distance. No better tribute to her life and character can be paid than that mentioned by the pastor, who said that it was the best example of "the simple life" he had known during his ministerial career,. She was a sister of Mr. Thomas Walker, of Hullett; her three sons are William, Thomas and George, and her daughters Mrs. T. Gibbings of town; Mrs. T. Smallacombe of St. Catharines; Mrs. Geo. Turner of Tuckersmith; Mrs. W. Tiplady, of Goderich township. The pall-bearers were two grandsons, and the four sons-in-law. [Thomas and George Shipley, William and Mills Shipley, William Tiplady and George Turner.] The floral tributes were exceedingly beautiful.
