Biography

Parents: James Bates Walker, Amanda Margaret Helm. MARRIED - In Woodford county on the 2d inst. Mr. J. B. WALKER, Merchant of Richmond, to Miss AMANDA HELM, daughter of Capt. Thomas Helm of the former place."

1. James' parents were William Walker and Jane Bates. William Walker, born 1769, married Jane Bates, born 1776, daughter of John Bates.

2.William's parents were Asaph & Judith Watkins.Asaph Walker, born 1735. Died October 21, 1808. Judith Watkins, born [September 22,]1742. Died September 26, 1812. Probably married between 1762 and 1765 in Cumberland Co., VA (or Chesterfield). Asaph lived in Henrico, Albermarle and Buckingham Counties where most of his children were born. Judith Watkins born at Monicantown, Henrico Co., VA. They moved to Madison Co., KY about 1783 and bought farm about 1790. Asaph Walker and Judith Watkins’ children were: Stephen Watkins, James, William, John Watkins, David Veril, Celia, Judith, Elizabeth and Mary Watkins.

Land office records, Richmond, Virginia at a court held for Buckingham County, VA 13th of March 1780, Asaph Walker made oath that he served six months in the last French and Indian war, 1758 as a soldiar under Col. Byrd and was regularly discharged: that he never claimed any land for his services which is ordered to be certified to the Register of the Land Office. Warrant issued to Edward Peters – assignee of Asaph Walker. 50 acres ---- May 20th, 1780 by Rolfe Eldridge, Clerk Court. Col. James Byrd, commander of Fort Augusta in 1758. Asaph Walker doubtless a grandson or great grandson of Col. John Walker or Thomas Walker, Burgess’ from Glouster and King & Queen Counties.


3. Joel Walker, Asaph’s father, was an officer if the Vestry, St. Johns Church, Henrico, County Parish 1733 and 1738 – born there about 1700, went to Cumberland County 1746.

4.Joel’s father David of Henrico. Joel born in Henrico moved to Cumberland about 1746. David and wife Elizabeth, Henrico formerly of New Kent. Elizabeth died 1727, made Will. Joel born about 1700. David born 1670.
