Biography

Ruth Walker was born 20 January 1851 in Feltwell, Norfolk. She was the daughter of Thomas Walker and Elizabeth Hammond. She married Henry Barton Walden in St. Mary's Church, Feltwell, 29 May 1874. They had 11 children, three died in childhood. Henry, known as Harry, lived in Gladstone Villa, The Beck, Feltwell. Ruth died 27 Jul 1939.

Late Mrs Walden – On Saturday the death occurred of Mrs Ruth Walden of the Beck, aged 76. She was a prominent member and active worker of the Wesleyan Methodist Society and took great interest in the Home and Foreign Missionary work. She was also a generous donor to all charitable institutions in connection with the Wesleyan movement and together with her husband was a keen politician and lifelong supporter of the Liberal cause, being at the last election one of the earliest voters. At the funeral at Feltwell, on Tuesday as the cortege proceeded through the village en route to the Wesleyan Church, blinds were drawn and businesses temporarily suspended and the bell was tolled at St. Mary’s Church. As the large congregation was assembling ‘Abide with Me’ was rendered by Mrs W Addison. The service was conducted by the Rev. E Dewing (Circuit Minister). The hymn ‘Rock of Ages’ was sung and an address was delivered by the Minister. On the procession leaving the church for St. Nicholas Churchyard, where the interment took place, ‘Oh Rest in the Lord’, was played by the organist. The Rev. Dewing again officiated at the graveside and the hymn ‘There’ll be no parting there’ was sung. The coffin of plain oak was inscribed, ‘Ruth Walden, Died July 27th 1929, Aged 76 years.”
