From Minutes of Dunnings Creek Monthly Meeting, Fishertown Bedford Co. PA:
15 Aug. 1827-Sarah [Harris] Walker & seven children on certificate from Monallen to Dunnings Creek M.M.
Children: Benjamin H.; Rebecca H.; Ruth; Barbara H.; Sarah; Anna; Beulah.
Abner was involved with the Underground Railroad with son Benjamin Harris Walker. Eleven grandsons of Abner Walker fought for the preservation of the Union and three gave up their lives for it. According to a letter written by Joseph Penrose:
"It was about ten miles north of Bedford and was the first station after leaving Bedford and called the Quaker settlement. Then Northwest of this was a family by the name of Walker that came to this county from Adams County. The old gentleman's name was Abner and he had a son Benjamin [Harris] Walker that done a great deal on this line. I have heard my grandfather Samuel Penrose and Uncle Josiah say that there never was a slave caught by their owners after it passed into Benjamin Walker's hand. Of course there was plenty of men in those days that lived along the line that was in sympathy with the work and good work it was, but when the genuine work had to be done the Ways, the Penroses and the Walkers had to do it."
Abner passed away on 30 Jul 1870, at Bedford County, Pennsylvania, USA, and was buried at Friends Cemetery (photo of memorial gravestone), Spring Meadow, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.[3][4]
