Caution: Multiple John Walkers

Several members of this family, all named John, are easily confused:

  • John Walker, born Dec 13, 1746, son of Francis Walker and his wife Catherine. In some genealogies referred to as John Jacob Walker, but this reflects a confusion with Jacob Walker, who was born in Germany as Jacob Wacker.
  • John Walker, b. 1753. In the 1776 Census [1] there is a Walker family comprised of the following: (1) Elizabeth Walker, 64, b. 1712, (2) Elizabeth Walker, 52, b. 1724, (3) Elizabeth Walker, 29, b. 1747, John Walker, 25, b. 1753 , and John Walker, 6, b. 1770. Proximity says they are part of this family, but they have not yet been placed in relationship to the other Walkers named John.
  • John George Walker, born October 17, 1758, son of Francis Walker and his wife Catherine. Listed in St. John's Church birth records as John, but with identical birthdate for the person who in later life referred to himself as George Walker
  • John Walker, born January 6, 1777 son of Francis Walker and his wife Sarah Soper and grandson of Francis and Catherine Walker. (In some of Joan Majtenyi's earlier writings, she calls this John "John, Jr", and makes him to be the son of John Edward Walker.)[2]
  • John Edward Walker, born 1778 and died 1856, son of John Walker, born 1746, and grandson of Francis Walker and Catherine. John Edward Walker is associated with Long Old Fields in Spaulding, Prince Georges County.
  • John B. Walker, b. abt 1805 son of Francis Walker, Jr, grandson of Francis Walker Sr and his wife Sarah Soper, and great-grandson of Francis Walker I and his wife Catherine.

Biography of John Walker born 1746 to Francis and Catherine

Name

  • John Jacob. Some genealogies including Williams, History of Western Maryland, make this John to be "John Jacob" and confuse him with Jacob Walker. Jacob Walker, however, was born in Germany as Jacob Wacker.
  • John Walker of Francis. In 1806 John was referring to himself as "John Walker of Francis."
  • John Edward Walker, b. Dec 13, 1746 [p. 239] [3]of Francis [1720].

The early years of this John Walker are unknown. I have made some deductions based on census and deed records, including the middle name Edward. The following is my reconstruction of his life, and his offspring. I welcome any corrections and additions that are supported by fact. [4]

It is the first John in Francis Walker’s family whom Williams’ names “John Jacob”, however, this is not Jacob Walker, who was b. Germany as Jacob Wacker. [5]

1746 Birth

1746, Dec 13. Birth recorded as “John” in Register of St. John’s, Piscataway, Broad Creek.

John Walker, son of Francis and Catherine, was baptized Dec 13, 1746.

When Francis and Catherine entered the births of their children in the register of St. John's Church, Broad Creek, Piscataway Parish on August 3, 1753, when he was seven years old, they entered the name simply as "Jn". [6]

John Walker was born 13 Dec 1746 in King George's Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland. [7]

He was the son of Francis Walker, b. Bef 1724 and his wife Catherine [7]

Early Years

The early years of this John Walker are unknown. I have made some deductions based on census and deed records. The following is largely supposition. I welcome any corrections and additions that are supported by fact. [8]

1776 Census

It is possible he is the John listed in the 1776 Census as being 31 (born in 1745) and maried to Rachel 25. They had three boys at that time, and one was Richard Lewis, b. 2/17/1772. [9]

In the 1776 Census for Prince George's County, St. John's and Prince George Parishes Maryland State Census 1776, pg 84 one sees:

  • John Walker, 31: 6: 4: 2
  • Rachell, 25

1777 Marriage

About 1777 John Edward married and had a son John, also known as John, who I’ll call John, Jr. In 1808 John Jr. married Ann Locker [2]

John Walker's wife was named Rachel. [10]

In King George's Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland, he married Rachel. Her birth family and name is not known. She was born in 1751 and died after 1776 in Prince George's County, Maryland (Age > 26 years)

1806 Sale of Corn by Elisha to John

In 1806 Elisha Walker sold his corn crop to his brother John. "Know all men by these presents that I Elisha Walker of Montgomery County and State of Mryland for and in consideration of the sum of eighty dollars current money...by John Walker of Francis.....do bargain and sell unto the said John Walker of Francis all the crop of corn and tobacco herein after mentioned ....29 day of October one thousand eight hundred and six." [11]

1831 Death of John

1831 John Edward died after 1831. [2] While he is simply named John when his birth record was recorded, he transmits a deed in 1831 as John Edward.

While he is simply named John when his birth record was recorded, he transmits a deed in 1831 as John Edward.

I start by assuming saying that John, b. 1746, probably had at least one son named John Edward, who by 1840 was living in Washington, DC. [12]

John Walker died after 1776 in King George's Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland. [7]
