Buried Plantersville, Lee Co, Ms.
Note: I, Ernestine Layton, remember as a young girl, about 16 years old going with myclassmates to see the new Sunshine Mills in Tupelo. We were taken two at a time to the top for viewing and was escorted by one operator.. He would stay withthe. two until the elevator went down and brought up two more, and then two went down. We had been brought up and the two before us went down. The elevator came up and two women came up. The elevator came up and one lady was helped off. He turned. to help the second lady, who only had one arm get off. As she started off the elevator drop down a little. The man told her to grab his arm andhe would help her off. Just as she started off the elevator started down. Hetried to get her but. she fell and his arm was caught and he was almost pulleddown as well. Barbara Nell Finney and I was in a panic. He needed first aideand we couldn't help. We were left up there until they could get this lady out and start the elvator up. again. It was one of the most horrible things I have ever experienced. Barbara Nell and I were afraid to get back in the elevatorto go down.
