Biography

24.06--Mahala Walker, b. ca. 1825 in IN; d. aft. 1850; bd. unk.; m. 26 Jan 1841 in Martin Co., IN, to Grandison Farris (b. ca. 1815 in KY; d. aft. 1850; bd. unk.; Grandison's first marriage was to a Sally Killburn in KY); m2. to Mr. Chandler (); at least 3 ch., all by Mr. Farris;
[John M. Gwin Note: The Indiana State Library Genealogy Database lists a Mahala Walker as marrying Grandison Farris in Martin County on 26 Jan 1841. I believe this to be our Mahala because in the 1850 census of Martin Co., as referenced below, Mahala, Grandison, and their children are living next door to Thomas Walker, Hannah Walker, and their children.]

[John M. Gwin Note: Ancestry.com says that the U. S. General Land Office Records, 1796-1907, lists Grandison Farris as being issued, in the Vincennes Land Office, 40 acres of Section 35, T2N, R4W, on 1 Feb 1839]

[John M. Gwin Note: Indiana Marriage Records: Bride's Last Name: WALKER; First Name: MAHALA; Spouse- Last Name: FARRIS; Spouse- First Name: GRANDISON; County: Martin; Marriage Date: 1-26-1841]

[listed as Mahala Farris, 25, b. IN, in the 5 Oct 1850 census of Columbia Twp., Martin Co., IN]
[listed as Mahala Chandler, 33, b. IN, in the 9 Aug 1860 census of Trinity Springs P. O., Mitcheltree Twp., Martin Co., IN; Evidently Grandison Farris has died, Mahala has m2. Mr. Chandler, who has died as well.]

[listed as Grandison Farris, 35, laborer, b. KY, in the 5 Oct 1850 census of Columbia Twp., Martin Co., IN]
[John M. Gwin Note: Mahala is named in the probate of Isham Gwin's will. We know that the probate occurred after his wife's (Mary Canterbury Gwin's) death, and we know that Mary Canterbury Gwin was alive in the 1850 census. I think this means that Mahala was alive at least as late as 1850.]

  • 25.01-- Elizabeth Farris, b. ca. 1834 in IN to Grandison and Sally Killburn Farris; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.;
[listed as Elizabeth Farris, 16, b. IN, in the 5 Oct 1850 census of Columbia Twp., Martin Co., IN]
  • 25.01--James W. Farris, b. ca. 1845 in IN; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.;
[listed as James Farris, 5, b. IN, in the 5 Oct 1850 census of Columbia Twp., Martin Co., IN]
[listed as James Farris, 15, b. IN, in the 9 Aug 1860 census of Trinity Springs P. O., Mitcheltree Twp., Martin Co., IN]
[John M. Gwin Note: FindaGrave.com lists a memorial #71089071 for a Pvt. James W. Farris, Civil War veteran of Co. F, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, b. unk.; d. 27 Jul 1862 in Martin Co., IN, bd. Pleasant Valley Cem., Martin Co., IN. While the memorial lists his birth as being unk., the photo of the gravestone shows that it was once broken off (the exposed stub still shows), probably by vandals, then later reinserted into the ground, the bottom portion of the stone being hidden in the ground. Nevertheless, the words "DIED July 27, 1862, AGED 17..." do show, and it is assumed that if the photographer had scraped away a little of the dirt, one could have seen James Farris' entire age in years, months, and days, as was common in the day. That he was 17, however, places his DOB at about 1845, the same as our James, so I believe this is the grave of our cousin, son of Mahala Walker Farris Chandler, and grandson of Thomas and Polly Gwin Walker. No other Farris surnames are listed as being buried in that cemetery.]
  • 25.02--Mary J./I. Farris, b. ca. 1847 in IN; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.;
[listed as Mary J. (or I.) Farris, 3, b. IN, in the 5 Oct 1850 census of Columbia Twp., Martin Co., IN]
  • 25.03--Nancy C./E. Farris, b. ca. Sep 1850 in IN; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.;
[listed as Nancy C. Farris, 0 y 1 m, b. IN, in the 5 Oct 1850 census of Columbia Twp., Martin Co., IN]
[listed as Nancy E. Farris, 9, b. IN, in the 9 Aug 1860 census of Trinity Springs P. O., Mitcheltree Twp., Martin Co., IN]
[John M. Gwin Note: Ancestry.com lists a Nancy E. Farris as having married on 12 Feb 1873 in Dubois, Dubois Co., IN, to Samuel P. McCain. While we have no proof yet that this is our Nancy, Dubois County is immediately south of Martin and west of Orange, so the geography fits. And if she is ours, her age at this marriage would have been about 23, so that fits as well.][1]
