Biography

David Walker was born in about 1678 in Taunton, Massachusetts. [1] He was a son of James Walker and Bathsheba (Brooks) Walker.[2]

David joined with others from the South Taunton area in petitioning for a division of the land of the Southern Purchase into a new town on October 11, 1708. The town of Dighton was officially organized in 1712.[3]

He was a farmer and resided in Dighton, Massachusetts. He represented Dighton in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1721 and also in 1745. He was a selectman in Dighton in 1732. He held the rank of captain (probably in the local militia).[1][2]

He married Mary, whose last name is not recorded, in Scituate, Massachusetts, in October 1703. David was "of Taunton" at the time of the marriage.[4][5] Nine children were born to their marriage. Some time after Mary's death in 1750, he married Esther (Paul) Dillingham. [1]

Births recorded in Dighton for David Walker and his wife Mary include:[6]

  • "--- Walker, the daughter of david walker by Mary ---- wife born the fifteenth day of August seventeen hundred and four"
  • "Elezabeth walker, the daughter of david walker by mary his wife born aprel the first day seventeen -undred and twelve"
  • "---anah walker the daughter of david walker by mary his wife born September twenty sixth day seventeen hundred and seven"
  • "-athsheba walker the daughter of david walker and mary his wife born March the Eight day seven--- hundred and fourteen"
  • "david walker the son of david walker by mary his wife born may the twenty-fourth day seven--- ---dred and seventeen"

David Walker wrote his will on August 9, 1759. Inventory of his estate was taken on 27 September 1765 and the will was proved in October 1765.[7] Heirs named in the will were: "Esther, my beloved wife"; son David Walker junior of Dighton; son Jonathan Walker; grandson Nathaniel Walker, "son of my son Nathaniel Walker deceased"; daughter Mary, wife of Ebenezer Richmond; daughter Hannah wife of Daniel Gansher(?); daughter Elisabeth wife of William Asten; daughter Bathsheba, wife of Mr. Robert Luscomber; daughter Marcy Latham(?), wife of Silas Latham(?); and daughter Esther, wife of Seth Richmond. Son David Walker was designated to be guardian to the grandson Nathaniel until he reached age 21. Nathaniel was directed to make annual payments to his mother during her widowhood. [8] Heirs receiving portions in the distribution of his estate in October 1765 were daughter Mary, wife of Ebenezer Richmond; heirs of daughter Hannah Girsho, deceased, wife of Daniel Girsho; heirs of daughter Elizabeth Austin, deceased, wife of William Austin; daughter Mercy Linkon, wife of Silas Linkon; daughter Esther Richmond, wife of Seth Richmond; sons David Walker and Jonathan Walker; and heirs of son Nathaniel Walker. The latter group were to receive "his Proportion of his Sister Luscombes right Leaving no heris."[9]

Under the "Biography" heading, paragraph #4, The entry reads that David married Esther (Dillingham) Paul... This is incorrect and should read: David married Esther (Paull) Dillingham Phillips, daughter of Edward and Esther Paull, widow of John Dillingham and widow of (Mr.) Phillips.

ORIGINAL REPLY HAS BEEN EDITED: Yes, Paul or Paull was her maiden name. The source was misquoted. (My fault.) It is corrected now. Thanks for pointing this out.

However, the text here is based on the cited source. The source cited gave only her name; it did not identify her parents or her previous husband. I don't want to put words into the mouth of the source.

Walker-56568 and Walker-2026 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, similar dates of both (both appear to be estimates), same place of birth, same date and place of death, and both were married to a Mary. I think the new profile is a duplicate -- let's get these merged.

Several internet sources identify this David Walker as a son of James Walker and Bathsheba Brooks. This is very credible. They were having babies at that time, and David named one of his daughters Bathsheba.
