Sarah Lela^[1] Walker was born about 1872 in South Carolina according to her record in the 1880 Census. She was enumerated as Lelar Walker, 8 year old daughter of Jackson Walker (age 47), living in Catawba, York County, South Carolina, United States of America. Also living in the home were Jackson's wife Mary (age 37); sons Edgar (age 11), Grier (age 10), and John (age 6); and daughters "Minnie" (age 5), and Margaret (age 3).^[2]

She is said to have used the name Sarah Lela Williams.^[1]
