Biography

Drury was born 21 April 1788 Halifax County, Virginia.

He was the son of Daniel Wall and Linny Overby.

Drury married (1) Elizabeth Griffin 28 March 1812 Halifax County, Virginia. Elizabeth was the daughter of Elisha Griffin and Sarah Gold. They had the following children:

  1. Parthenia Wall 1810–
  2. Tabitha Wall 1815–1898
  3. William Jennings Wall 1818–1903

Elizabeth died 8 Oct 1823.

He married (2) Tabitha Browder in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Tabitha was the daughter of Thompson Browder and Tabitha Johnson. She was born in 1800 in Forsyth County, North Carolina [1] [2]. Together they had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth Jane Wall 1826–1913
  2. Jesse P Wall 1826–1904
  3. James R Wall 1827–1911
  4. Isabella G. Wall 1830–1910
  5. John Wall 1835–1863
  6. Martha Wall 1836–
  7. Malinda Wall 1838–1915
  8. James D Wall 1841–1863
  9. Mary Johnson Wall 1844–1915

Drury was a veteran of the War of 1812 and Tabitha applied for a widow's pension (source?). This pension also shows brother Adam named in the pension claim, as is "nephew" Mastin Wall.

Drury died 9 Jul 1857 (aged 69) in Bethania, Forsyth County, North Carolina, and is buried in Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rural Hall, Forsyth County, North Carolina, Plot Row G #33.

Research notes

His first marriage was to Elizabeth Griffin, in 1812.

Some descendants of Drury have been found to be autosomal DNA matches to Wall members in Group 01a in the Wall DNA project at Family Tree DNA. If there are any male patrilineal descendants of Drury, it would be good for them to join the project and get a Y DNA test. This could verify whether or not Drury is in the Group 01a DNA type.

What is the source for the middle name "Benjamin"?

It appears he did go by Ben, at least some of the time. The death certificate for Elizabeth Jane Shield, who was born in 1826 in Halifax County, Virginia and died in 1914 in Stokes County, North Carolina, names Drury Wall and Tabitha Browder as her parents. A sibling, Malinda Ann, was born in 1838 in Halifax County and died in 1915 in Stokes County. Her death certificate names parents Ben Wall and Tabitha Browder, providing evidence for both names: Drury and Ben. [3] [4] Relationship between these daughters of Drury is also established in Tabitha Wall's will, naming her children [5]. Is there a better source for his Benjamin name?

NOTE 1850 census Bethania, Stokes Co., NC
  • 5. Elizabeth WALL
b. ????
d. after 1850 <<to Laurens Co., South Carolina???>>
m. William VAUGHAN s/o John VAUGHAN & Amelia JONES
NOTE: Elizabeth WALL VAUGHAN is technically not verified. My Great Uncle William Clarence WALL s/o Shadrach Edward WALL & Mary Jane HUFF, before he passed away in 1980, wrote down what he recalled of the WALL family origins. He claimed Byrd WALL had a sister who married a VAUGHAN//VAUGHN but he could not recall either of their first names. My Aunt Mary Lou WALL STAHL & I have verified every other claim he made, his memory was sound, and he did not guess if he didn't recall exactly. While my Grandfather Ernest Leonard WALL was the eldest son, it was youngest son Uncle Clarence who seemed to have paid the most attention to remembering what he was told of the WALL family origins. I located this marriage of William VAUGHAN to Elizabeth WALL up in Mecklenburg County Virginia and it is a perfect fit to Uncle Clarence's memory. John VAUGHAN lived near the Byrd WALL & Lucy GRIFFIN homestead in Halifax Co. Va along the Mecklenburg Co. line down near the border b/w Va & NC so the fact that William and Elizabeth married in Mecklenburg Co., Va is not problematic due to where Byrd & Lucy WALL's property was prior to relocating to Stokes Co., North Carolina. Plus, Amelia JONES VAUGHAN the mother of William VAUGHAN, was the sister of Philadelphia JONES GRIFFIN YANCEY, whose first husband Francis GRIFFIN was the brother of Lucy GRIFFIN WALL's grandfather John GRIFFIN Sr. m. Sarah PARRISH so there are other family tie ins as well. And the fact William & Elizabeth appear to have relocated to Laurens Co., SC would explain why they are not well remembered by the other WALL lines. Most of the WALLs and allied families who left the Stokes Co., Forsyth Co. vicinity went west to Tennesse/Kentucky//Missouri//Kansas not South toward South Carolina.
