Biography

Mary Talcott was born, probably Braintree, Essex, England, before 1604; she died, probably there, between 1604 (father's will)[1] and 1616 (maternal grandfather's will).[2][3]

Mary was the daughter of John Talcott and his wife, Anne Skinner.[4][5][6][7]

John and Anne (Skinner) Talcott's daughter, Mary Talcott, was mentioned in his 1604 will, but her name is not found in the will of either maternal grandparents (1616 and 1617/8).

John and Anne's daughter Mary likely died young, as reported by Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, "Hale, House, and related families, mainly of the Connecticut River Valley" (Hartford, Connecticut Historical Society, 1952), 747-765 (John Talcott [and ancestors/descendants]) at 747-748 (John Talcott, died Braintree); digital images, Hathi Trust, cites English Talcott, Wall and Skinner wills published by S. V. Talcott, F. F. Starr and H. F. Waters.

Research Notes

Prior Version. A prior version of this profile included information attributing her as,

  • Mary Wall--"born about 1598" cites the baptismal record (indexed only) of Mary Wall, baptized Willingale Doe, Essex, England, daughter of Thomas Wall. This presumably is also the source for, "also found Birth Place WILLINGALE DOE,ESSEX,ENGLAND."
  • Mary (Talcott) Aylett. This identity was disputed by WikiTree collaborators. It was Anne (Skinner) (Talcott) Wall's daughter Mary Wall (not Mary Talcott) who married Robert Aylett. This association was published by Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, Hale, House, and related families, mainly of the Connecticut River Valley (Hartford, Connecticut Historical Society, 1952), 746-748 (John Talcott), at 748; digital images, Hathi Trust. It is proven by a combination of wills showing both that John Talcott's daughter, Mary Talcott, predeceased her maternal grandfather; and that Moses Wall's daughter Mary Wall survived. For the notion that John Talcott's daughter Mary did not survive, see the wills of William Skinner, 1616 (InternetArchive); and Margerie Skynner, 1617 (InternetArchive). The evidence for Ann's daughter Mary Wall survived is seen in Moses Wall 1623 Will. See also profile comments/discussions here and here. See also notes regarding the will of Robert's wife, reporting she had a brother Moses. Mary (Wall) Aylett was born and died at England. Her father was Moses Wall (bef.1583-bef.1624).
  • Mary (Talcott/Aylett) Eggleston, both, it seems, as the first or second wife of Bigod Eggleston (1587-1674). Information in the prior profile included that she died at Windsor, Connecticut, 8 December 1657.
Robert Charles Anderson found no support to identify either wife of the immigrant. See The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Volumes I-III, 3 vols. (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1995). 620-624 (Bigod Eggleston) at 622; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

(b) New England Marriages prior to 1700 includes entry for a Egleston-Talcott/Aylett? 1630-35 by 1638 marriage (his second). See New England Marriages prior to 1700, multiple vols. (Boston, Mass.: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2015), 1:503 (Egleston); database and digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors, works consulted as "NYGBR 23:122, 78:6; Beach Anc. Prior profile notations,

(a) Her name is also found as Sarah ... However, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33 is silent on her given and maiden names
(b) Almost nothing is known about the wife/wives of Bigod Eggleston, The great Migration Begins mentions Mary, but cannot find documentation for this or other names. The most complete and extensive treatment of Bigod Eggleston was published in 1991 by Rosalie Eggleston and Linda Eggleston McBroom [Bygod Eggleston: Englishman & Colonist and Some of His Descendants (Toledo 1991)].
(c) Mary Hall ...also found as Mary Wall, Mary Talcott, Mary Talcott (Hall/Wall) The Hall/Wall difference is obviously from misreading a document, one name was written the other was read by a less than careful transcriber.
(d) Mary's siblings. The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33 is convincing that Bigod had two wives. Given this, her siblings with mixed Talcott and Hall/Wall surnames is in error. Since neither of his wives surnames is truly known, any attempt at separating them is, at best, an excersize in futility
(d) If only one of the researchers would read the will of John Talcott, the son of John Talcott and unknown Wells, the question about who Bagot Eggleston married in England, brought to Dorchester in 1630, would be answered.

It didn't seem we had support to re-create this "Mary (Talcott) Aylett" as Mary (Wall) Aylett. That's understandable, since the profile originally created (2010) was about Mary Talcott, the daughter of John and Anne (Skinner) Talcott. Two years later, the profile of Mary Talcott was merged into a profile of Mary (Talcott) Aylett.

Thus ... I have created a new profile for Mary (Wall) Aylett (bef.1613-bef.1659), the daughter of Moses and Ann (Skinner) (Talcott) Wall. When the work on the profile is mostly complete, I'll return to work on this profile, only to make sure the two profiles clearly distinguish between the two Marys, both daughters of Anne.

Apart from the Talcott issue, the wrong baptism is cited: her father was Moses Wall not John Wall and her date of birth is likely to have been around 1609 (see reasoning in comment below).

This Mary was NOT the wife of Robert Aylett as stated since his wife Mary died as his widow in Braintree in 1659. Her will does cite Moses Wall as her brother, and her mother's will cites an earlier Talcott son though she was herself Wall at death. So I conclude that Mary Wall married Robert Aylett and has no connection to the American Mary at issue here.

Hi Ruth,

I haven't researched the details of Robert Aylett's life, but see my comment below.

In the child list on the profile of Moses Wall (bef.1583-bef.1624), I called his daughter Mary Wall, and reported she married Robert Aylett of Braintree, clothier. For Mary Wall's association as Robert's wife, I cited Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, Hale, House, and related families, mainly of the Connecticut River Valley (Hartford, Connecticut Historical Society, 1952), 746-748 (John Talcott), at 748; digital images, Hathi Trust.

See PROB-11-293-297 at the UK National Archives, made 30 Dec 1657, which starts: 'I Mary Aylett widow and relict of Robert Aylett late of Braintree deceased'. She isn't in America. She leaves lots of household stuff to her children, money to the poor of Braintree, and the will is proved in London. I have ref'd some of the wills in Robert Aylett her husband, qv. He is likely to have married Mary around 1629 when he was 28; women were typically a bit younger so Mary was probably born around 1609. Their eldest son, Thomas, was married by license in 1662 when he was said to be age 32, thus was born around 1630. The Jan 1636/7 will of Anne (Skinner) Wall, Mary's mother is at the Essex Records Office D/AMW 4/233: Will of Ann Wall of Felsted, widow, and mentions Thomas and also two other of her daughter's children, John, and Mary, both therefore born before then, as well as leaving Robert 20 Nobles. She mentions a Talcott son clearly from an earlier Talcott marriage: it could have been that Mary was from this earlier marriage and was also a Talcott, though she also mentions her brother Moses Wall in her own will and is most likely to have been born after John Talcott died (see above). The point I want to stress however is that she never went to New England, so whatever Mary was there, she is not the one who married Robert Aylett.

Yes, this is a family in England. See Moses Wall (bef.1583-bef.1624),

We have two wills suggesting John and Ann (Skinner) Talcott's daughter Mary Talcott did not survive.

We have at least two wills (possibly three) suggesting Moses and Ann (Skinner) (Talcott) Wall's daughter Mary Wall did survive.

If we need more evidence, I'll work on a G2G. --Gene

For further proof that Mary, m. Robert Aylett was Mary Wall, not Mary Talcott, I followed the breadcrumbs in Jacobus and Waterman (1952). They wrote,

"John Talcott's will named his young children, John, Rachel, Anne, Mary, and Sarah; their grandfather Skinner's will named only John, Rachel and Sarah in 1616, and these three only were named in the will of their step-father in 1623."

Separate from Moses Wall 1623 Will, see William Skinner's will in Henry F. Waters, Genealogical Gleanings in England, 3 vols. (Boston, New-England Historic Genealogical Society, 1885-89), 2:1205 (William Skinner of Braintree, yeoman, 1616); digital images, InternetArchive, for "To John Taylcoate, Sara Taylcoate and Rachell Taylcoat, Moyses Wall, Lidia Wall and Mary Wall, the children of my said daughter An ... "

Then see the will of Margerie Skynner in Henry F. Waters, Genealogical Gleanings in England, 3 vols. (Boston, New-England Historic Genealogical Society, 1885-89), 2:1206 (Margerie Skynner of Braintree, widow, 1617); digital images, InternetArchive, for Sara Taylcoat ... Rachell Taylcoate ... my daughter Ann her two daughters she had by my son in Moses Wall ..."

Edited to add: She should be severed as the daughter of John Talcott (1562-1604) and linked as the daughter of Moses Wall (bef.1583-bef.1624). Her birth should be before 1613 (she was named in the will of her paternal grandmother, Mary (Averell) (Wall) (Witham) Gaywood (bef.1551-bef.1613), and not yet 18 at the time her father wrote his will in 1623.

A new profile should be added for Mary Talcott, daughter of John Talcott (and Ann Skinner). This Mary Talcott died young, as set forth by Jacobus and Waterman (1952), supported by both of her maternal grandparents' wills.

I agree with your suggestions. And Mary (Wall) Aylett died in Braintree, Essex, so that should be changed too.

Wall-364 and Talcott-14 do not represent the same person because: Significantly different birth dates
It has been agreed that Mary Wall is in reality Mary Talcott, her Grandfather on her mothers side was surnamed Wall, not her father. She should be merged into Talcott-14.

Hi Tom,

The Moses Wall 1623 Will names his widow, Ann (my well beloved wife), and his children, Moses Wall, Lydia Wall and Mary Wall. The will also calls out his step children (called in laws), John Talcott, Rachel Talcott and Sarah Talcott.

The earlier 1613 will of Moses' mother, Mary (Averell) (Wall) (Witham) Gaywood calls out her son Moses Wall, and his children, Moses Wall, Lydia Wall and Mary Wall. The details of Mary Gaywood's will are from the source below. I have poor copies of her will, but have not found the document as a readily accessible published version.
