Biography

Sir John Wallace, the eldest son of John Wallace, born circa 1573 in Craigie, Ayrshire, Scotland, succeeded his father in the lands of Craigie. [1]

As bailie of Kyle, John Wallace claimed for his son Hugh Wallace (1600-bef.1660), the office of town clerk of Ayr a pretension which the magistrates of the burgh determined to resist. In the assertion of his claims, Hugh Wallace (1600-bef.1660) menaced a descent upon the town with a party of retainers, which led the magistrates to "man the brig port," and "place a guard on the tolbooth." In carrying out their defence the magistrates ruled "that four men daylie keip the brig port, and the samyn to be closit ilk nycht at nyne houris at evin, quhill fyve houris in the morning, and to be hallolie closit ilk Sounday (except the wickat) in tyme of preiching, and na laids sufFerit to cum in thairby vpoun tho Sounday; also that sum bo nychtlic in the tolbuyth for keiping thairof." [1]

He married firstly, Agnes Somervell (1567-1628) in 1582 Minto, Roxburghshire, Scotland. [citation needed]

He married secondly, Margaret (Maxwell) Wallace (1579-abt.1625), third daughter of John, seventh Lord Maxwell. In their marriage contract, which is dated 15th December 1597,[2] John, eighth Lord Maxwell, with several cautioners, including John Maxwell of Kirkconnel and George Maxwell of Dramcoltram, became bound to pay to John Wallace, younger of Craigie, 7000 merks as dowry with his sister Margaret Maxwell.[1] John's father had married Margaret's mother just days earlier. They had issue:

  1. Isabel, b. 1599
  2. Hugh, [1] b. 1600, Craigie, Ayrshire, Scotland d. 08 Mar 1660, Craigie, Ayrshire, Scotland (Age 60 years)
  3. Thomas, b. 1603, Craigie, Ayrshire, Scotland
  4. James, b. 1604
  5. John, b. 1606, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland d. Aft 1640, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland (Age > 35 years)
  6. Margaret, b. 1609, Templetoun, Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland
  7. Robert, b. 1616, Craigie, Ayrshire, Scotland

John died before before July 1625 (possibly in 1615) Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. In 1625, his son, Hugh Wallace, appears as owner of the lands of Craigie, consequent on the death of his father. [1]

Wallace-14673 and Wallace-3363 appear to represent the same person because: I believe this is the same person. Same spouse and parentage.
