Biography

Uncertainty surrounds the origins of Harriet Wallace who must have arrived in the new Colony of South Australia in one of the original ships or very soon after. It has been thought that she travelled on the "John Pirie" and that she married Joseph Jones during the voyage or before they departed England or soon after arriving at Kingscote Kangaroo Island or later at Adelaide. Poor or non-existant records shroud all this in mystery. Joseph Jones was listed as an assisted immigrant on the "John Pirie" to work for the South Australia Company but there is no mention of Harriet. Harriet Wallace does not appear as a passenger on any other of the ships of the first fleet and it may well be that she did travel on the "John Pirie". Joseph and Harriet bred a large family starting with their son William born in 1837 which would indicate that date of conception was during the voyage or shortly after arriving at Nepean Bay Kangaroo Island. Official records were not kept at that early time in South Australia. That her maiden name was Wallace is confirmed when as a widow, she married widower James Dix in 1865 at Clarendon. SABDM records her birth year as 1813 and her father as Robert Wallace ( when she married James Dix). Her descendants also used the Wallace name as middle names. Harriet was married to James Dix for 17 years. She died in 1882 and was buried at Clarendon-Kangarilla Cemetery ( see image headstone).

Harriet was born about 1813. Harriet Wallace ... She passed away in 1882. [1]
