Biography

Charles was born in New York state (city unknown) about 1859. He was the son of William Wallace and Merriam Miller. In 1860, at the age of eight months, Charles' family had relocated to Acquacknock, Passaic, New Jersey. By 1870, Charles had moved with his family again, this time they were living in the Byberry section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Charles' father, William, died in 1880 from alcoholism. Charles is seen in the 1880 US Census in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, residing in a household where his mother, Merriam, (Marion) is listed as "Head", and his brother John, sister in law, Margaret, and their three children are also at residence. Charles is listed as a "Boarder".

Charles married, in Philadelphia, around 1893. He is enumerated in the 1900 US Census living in Philadelphia, listing is status as Married (for seven years). No record found, to date, of marriage, or the Maiden (or previously married) name of his wife, Martha. There are three children listed on census, two born after the declared marriage date of 1893. The third, Jennie, is listed as being born in March of 1889, so it appears she was either born out of wedlock, or was the product of a previous marriage to mother, Martha. (Martha states she was born in Scotland, May 1864). Charles is enumerated in the 1910 US Census living with his brother, John, in Waterford, Camden, New Jersey. Charles lists his marital status as "Widowed", and no children appear at residence.

Charles passed away on December 27, 1919, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The cause of death was Pleurisy. He was buried on December 31, 1919, at Greenwood Cemetery, in Philadelphia.
