John Wallace was born in 1808 in Amsterdam, New York. He was Scotch, according to the 1871 Canada Census record and his father was William Wallace, as there was only one Wallace family listed in the 1810 U.S. Census in Amsterdam, that of William Wallace: a household of a man and a woman between the ages of 26 and 45 and two boys and a girl, the children under 10 years old. John married Susannah Beckwith in 1843 in Toronto, Canada. Their wedding was witnessed by Thomas Elgie and Elizabeth Cook, who were married immediately after, John and Susannah serving as witnesses, as well as Susannah's brother Robert. John and Susannah had the following children: William Peddie, 1845-1919, Jessie, 1847-1926, George Washington, 1849-1881, Elizabeth, 1852-1934, John, Jr.,1853-1893, Robert Henry, 1855-, and Susan, 1858-1863. John was a hotel keeper and was the proprietor of the Milton Hotel or Milton Inn, Milton, Ontario.
