Biography

JONATHAN, b. near Paisley, Ayshire, Scotland [1764{1923ed}] ab. 1758 [gs], for several years a cabinet maker and corn merchant at Galston, came to America in 1785. Worked some years in Campton, Sandwich, and Moultonboro, N. H. Res. in Ryegate at time of his marriage <NEGR v.54 p.284 (Marriage Records of Rev. Jeremiah Shaw of Moultonboro)>. He m. Moultonboro June 10, 1789 Abigail Richardson of Moultonboro [ibid], dau. of Bradbury Richardson. They lived in Ryegate till 1797, when he bought a farm near the Four Corners in Barnet where he lived til his death, Apr. 5, 1854, aged 95 [gs]. His wife d. Sept. 27, 1853 Æ 85 [gs]. Both bur. Center Cem.

He worked also as a carpenter and mill-wright, building the first grist-mill in Wheelock. He brought from Scot-land the brass works for a tall Scotch clock. Being a cabinet maker by trade he made a case from a Sheraton pattern. This clock is now [ca.1923] owned by his gr. gr. dau., Miss Edith Wallace, and keeps good time.

Jonathan Wallace was appointed by Governor Chittenden, in 1794, lieutenant in the 1st Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Division of Vt. Militia. He and his wife were members of the Center church. The Wallace family in Scotland from which he came, claim kindred with that of Sir William Wallace, the hero of Scotland. <BTH>

They lived and she died Aug. 14, 1883 [dc-BVR(1:73)] on the Wallace homestead near the Four Corners in Barnet; after she d. he sold the place and boarded in different families 'til d., leaving "all that he had (abt. $900) to the Center Cem. to keep it in good condition generally"; both bur. Center Cem., q. v. (p. 438).
