Biography

Rev Robert Wallace, Treasurer China Inland Mission

THE REV. ROBERT WALLACE A North American number of "China's Millions" announces the death at Toronto, Canada, of the Bev.'Robert Wallace, formerly treasurer for the China Inland Mission there. Mr Wallace was born in Scotland in 1855. His boyhood and early manhood were spent in Dunedin, New Zealand, where as a young man he held a position in connexion with the water department of the City Council. While employed thus he found himself one day in the Young Men's Christian Association's reading room, and, picking up a copy of "China's Millions," he read an article * entitled "Appeal for China," issued fn 1877, which made a profound impression on his heart and changed the whole current of his life. He resigned his situation, went to England, and applied tq the China Inland Mission for service. Then, further to qualify for service abroad, he undertook a course of training at Spurgeon's College, London, but the open-air work undermined his health so that service in China became impossible, and he became associated with the home centre of the China Inland Mission in London. In 1882 Mr Wallace went to Canada, and for 31 ■'• years was connected with Marehmont Home in the city of Belleville, Ontario, for the major portion of the time being in charge of the work of that institution. During his service there aonie 7000 boys and girls from Scotland and England, drawn, principally from the Qaarrier and Leonard Shaw Homes respectively, passed through hiß. hands, and, under his direction, were settled in • suitable homes, mainly in the province of Ontario, and followed up regularly with occasional -visits, fatherly advice, and spiritual care. The great majority of these became worthy citizens of Canada, in the accomplishment of which result Mr Wallace had a very considerable share. While engaged in this work he crossed the Atlantic 60 times, and during his lifetime circled th/ globe twice.
