Biography

John was born in 1786, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Woodall) Wallace, in Rockingham County, Virginia. John's father lived in Sussex County, Delaware, and removed to Rockingham County, Virginia in 1782, where John was born. In around 1817 John moved to Champaign County, Ohio, where he married Mary Lamme, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Givens) Lamme. John and Mary would have at least 4 children as follows

Elizabeth Ann (Wallace) Clark (1818- )

Thomas Wallace (1819- )

Theophania Wallace (1820- )

William Hervey Lamme Wallace (1821-1862)

In 1825 John's wife Mary died in Ohio.

In the same year as Mary's death, John married Sarah Hitt, the daughter of Martin and Margaret Elizabeth (Smith) Hitt, in Ohio. They would have at least 7 more children including:

Martin Reuben Merritt Wallace (1829–1902)

Matthew H. W. Wallace (1837–1862)

John Fletcher Wallace ( - )

Caleb Hitt Wallace (1839-1890)

Sarah Wallace ( - )

John was a carpenter and builder, but an accident that injured his back forced him to quit the business and, in 1834, move his family to La Salle County, Illinois, where he took a land grant from the government and began farming.

With such a large family, John wanted his children to receive a good education so in 1840 he once again moved, this time to Mount Morris, Ogle County, Illinois, where the Rock River Seminary was being constructed. John was instrumental in helping with this endeavor.

John passed away in 1850. His body is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Morris, Ogle County, Illinois.
