Richard was born in 1819, the son of Richard Wallis and Mary Ann Bankin. Richard emigrated to New Zealand in 1842 on the "London" and transferred to Nelson on the "Blossom." He married Mary Ann Lake Coster nee Dockery and the 1845 Census of Nelson shows them as squatters on 20 acres of land at
Waimea West. By mid-1848, Richard and his family were living at Richmond where Richard undertook roles as a Wesleyan preacher, registrar, magistrate's clerk, teacher, postmaster and carter while also concentrating on his gardens and orchard in High Street. In 1866 the family moved to Motueka using the legacy from his step-mother, Penelope Dean, to buy land on Hursthouse Street, Motueka which they set up as an orphanage named "Hulmers", after Penelope's house in Essex. They also owned "The Gables" on Thorpe Street. Richard trained the boys in husbandry, kept the books, taught school and maintained discipline.
Richard died of throat cancer in 1882.[1][2][3] He is buried in the Motueka Cemetery.[4]
