Provo Wallis was the only son of Provo Wallis and Elizabeth Lawlor. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where his father was employed as a clerk to the master shipwright of the dockyard. Wallis had an exceptionally long career in the Royal Navy, beginning as a sailor with HMS Cleopatra in 1804 at the age of 14 and attaining the rank of admiral of the fleet in 1877. At his death at the age of 100, he was still on the active list of officers and receiving full pay.[1]
HMS Shannon and American frigate Chesapeake entering Halifax |
Wallis first distinguished himself during the War of 1812 as a lieutenant on Captain Philip Broke’s ship HMS Shannon. During a battle with the American frigate Chesapeake on June 1, 1813, Broke was severely wounded as was the American captain. Wallis took command of both ships, leading them into Halifax. He was promoted to commander on July 9, 1813 for the part he took in the capture of the Chesapeake. [2]
