"Columbus Lafayette Wallis, one of the best known men of the East part of the county passed away at the home of his son, Dalton Wallis, where he made his home on Thursday afternoon, March 22, at 4 o'clock. "Uncle Fate" as he was known by his many friends was born and lived all his life in the Dry Creek Community. He was the son of Tillman R. and Amanda Bartlett Wallis, members of pioneer families of this section. Hew was born September 25, 1869 living to the ripe old age of 81. In early life he was married to Miss Annie Grisham, a member of an old established family in this section. She preceeded him in death some 38 years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church and had served on the board of stewards of the Mt. Hebron Methodist Church for about a half century. The church never had a more devoted and consecrated member and although for some time his health did not permit him to attend services he still held a keen interest in the affairs of the church. He leaves to mourn his passing the following children; Rev. Dewey Wallis, Muscle Shoales, Alabama, Leonard and Dalton Wallis of Booneville, Mrs. P. U. Murley of Baldwyn, Mr. C. M. Goudy of Ripley, Mrs. H. C. Criswell, Mrs. E. L. Saylors, Mrs. B. L. Anderson and Mrs. Emily Green all of Booneville route. Two daughters preceeded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Mt. Hebron Methodist Church with burial in the County Line Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Crawford assisted by Rev. L. E. Horton and Rev. W. E. Sharp. A large throng of people attending and the beautiful floral offering was an outstanding tribute of respect with which he was held by all who knew him. The following grandsons served as active pall bearers; Junior Murley, Herschell Murley, Vance Saylors, Olin Saylors, Wallace Hughey, and Barney Wallis. In addition to the children, he leaves two brothers, one sister, 26 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. [3]
