Edward James Walsh was born in County Cork, Ireland on 6 July 1865. His mother, Marie Dressel, died during or shortly after child birth. Some months later, in December, Thomas Walsh emigrated to the U.S.A. by way of Baltimore, Maryland with Edward and possibly five other children.
After arrival in Baltimore they moved to Boston, Massachusetts. Unable to afford to care for his son, Thomas sent Edward to ultimately end up in the care of the Lauth family of Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wisconsin. There are conflicting stories of how he came into the care of the Lauth family. One story suggests that Edward was placed in the care of an abusive aunt before being taken in by the Lauths. At some point Edward was sent to seminary in Columbus, Wisconsin.
The fate of young Edward post seminary gets blurry. He may have moved to Chicago, Illinois for a short while before ending up in Saint Paul, Minnesota by 15. Once in Saint Paul Edward works in restaurants until he is finds employment with the Northern Pacific Railroad as a chef. He marries Caroline B. Flitsch on 22 September 1889. Together they had 8 children, though only a few made it to adulthood. A family joke says that every time Edward came home Caroline became pregnant. Edward James died on 19 January 1928, and was buried in Cavalry Cemetery.
