Michael was a merchant seaman who became master of trans-Atlantic ships. He served as master of wooden sailing ships built in Atlantic Canada while those ships sailed to Liverpool for sale to British buyers. Michael married Jemima Dawson, the daughter of the innkeeper with whom he boarded while his ships awaited sale in Liverpool.
