James was born in Liverpool, and lived with his mother's family in Kirkdale, Lancashire, while his father was at sea. He became a ship's master and moved to Prince Edward Island, where he married Ellen Feehan about 1893. Their children were Jemima born in 1896, Joseph born in 1897 and died young, Sarah Helen born in 1900, Henry born in 1902, and Mary Ann born in 1903. They resided in Prince Edward Island Lot 65 until his death in 1911.
