An atmosphere of sorrow swept over all Eldon Tuesday evening when it was given out news Andrew Walter proprietor of the East Side meat market had passed away early Tuesday morning. His death which was due to asthma and heart trouble came after about nine week illness.
It was not the good fortune of the writer to acquire the acquaintance of the deceased, but from what we can learn, it would be a hard matter to say too much for this good man. As one man said, "Andrew Walter was as honest as the day is long and everyone was his friend.
Mr. Walter has followed the Butcher business since he was a boy of sixteen years of age. He has operated a market in the city for 50 years having started Eldon's first meat market when this town was known as Ashland Crossing. The vacancy made at the East Side meat market in the deth of this good man will be extremely noticed by his admiring customers and friends in general.
Andrew Walter was born in Germany August 19, 1846; being seventy-four years, six months and seventeen days of age at the time of his death.
He came to New York City in 1866; in 1867 he went to Louisville, Kentucky' in 1868 he came to Missouri, and removed to Eldon in 1870, where he resided ever since. In the year 1872 he was united in marriage to Anna Reardon, who was born in County Cork, Ireland and who preceded him in death ten years ago. Ten children were born to this union, four of whom are dead. The living children are W. F. George, Andrew J. and Marguerite, all of Eldon; Mrs. J. J. Kennelly of St. Louis and Mrs. John Kehoe of Rock Island.
Funeral services were held from St. Aloysius Catholic church this forenoon, conducted by Father J. A. Brady. Internment in the Catholic Cemetery.
Note: Per Isabelle Muehe, it was told through the years that Andrew Walter's mother wanted him to come to the U.S. because she didn't want him to go to war. (It was the law of the land at the time that every young man between a certain age had to serve in the military--even during peace-time), so she sent him to America. He supposedly used his cousin's papers because his cousin, who was going to come, died before he could use it. [1]
